| Outdoor toxic plants Anyone live in Texas & have to completely re-landscape when you got your yorkie? Never realized how many toxic plants there are. My sago palms, wisteria, gardenia, hydrangea, azalea, yucca.... seems my entire yard is a hazard to my puppies. Any suggestions on plants that will survive our 100+ degree summers that are safe? I think every plant I know anything about is on the ASPCA's toxic list. |

| I don't think a dog is going to sample every plant you have just because. You have to give some credit to their instinct of self preservation. |

| I had a beautiful sago palm in the back yard and I would constantly tell dh that it was poisonous to the dogs. Well, one day he heard on TV what I had been telling him and when I got home it was gone. They never went anywhere near the sago. My back yard is full of oleanders, they don't sample those either. I think you are correct about the instinct of self preservation. I know Maggie has that instinct when it comes frogs, Buster did not. But they have no interest in any of the landscape that is considered poisonous, they seem to know it's not good for them.

| Thanks for the feedback. The silk plants are sounding pretty good . After spending hours looking I've decided to take a chance with some of the plants. Like the gardenia that would only cause an upset tummy. But the sago palms especially are history. Apparently it has seeds somewhere on it that are the most poisonous causing seizure & liver failure. Not taking chances with plants like that. We have two 7 month old puppies & while the male is too busy exploring my little girl does not pick her nose or mouth up off the ground. She is constantly chewing on something. Now if I could just put a bubble over my backyard so I didn't have to worry about hawks & owls I would be in great shape. |

| I do not give puppies/dogs credit for ANY common sense at all, especially any "instinct for self preservation"....they will eat poisonous plants, roach bait, ant bait, anti freeze, medication they find in your purse or dropped on the floor, grapes, raisins, onions, buttons, bells, etc........I also see too many dead in the road, and hear of pets drowning in Koi ponds and swimming pools........obviously, their instinct for self preservation was sorely lacking! I personally believe if you have anything around that will make them sick or kill them, it is just a matter of time! I learned a long time ago not to play Russian Roulett....I am not that lucky! |

| It definitely takes dilligence if you are going to own one of these plants to makee sure your pets dont get to it. MY sagio is put outside behind my waterfall to my pond in the summer and the dogs cant get to it. It is brought in in the winter and put into my bedroom in the corner with many other plants I have to bring in in front of it. Im not saying anyone should get a sAGIO iM JUST STATING HOW i KEEP ONE AND KEEP MY DOGS SAFE

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Another idea is you can create raised flower beds. Then you can also buy some pretty lower height picket fences to surround the flower beds. This is obviously more expensive but I have a neighbour who has done this and it looks very attractive. I have used the picket fence idea, as our dogs love to "dig" in the garden.

| But you cant really take the chance especially with how small yorkies are it would be like leaving bakers chocolate on the floor its just not a good idea and could end up being deadly.

| My grandpa is crazy about his yard plants flowers, mows, weed eats, sprays weed killer everything but when I told him how many plants can be toxic and that the weed killer could be as well we made a deal that he could still put flowers in his hanging baskets on the deck (there not poisonous or anything and she cannot reach them) but that other then mowing and spraying for fleas and ticks he would not plant or spray anything in the back yard but that he could do anything in the front. Its not like anyone sees the back anyway.
