| Found Tick..need questions answered Hi Everyone. I was rubbing Pasquale's tummy today when i noticed tiny moving tick legs. I was able to get out the entire tick with tweezers and it was still alive. This is the first time I've ever found a tick on him. We recently moved to another area in our town which is more woodsy. I'm just curious...do you think i should take him to the vet and have them do a blood test for lyme's ?

| Gross!! I would take Pasquale into the vet, Get him checked out and tested. Good thing you found it!! I would also get him on a flea/tick preventative!

| I think it takes a while (two weeks) for disease to become detectable. Also, was the tick fat/engorged or flat/hungry? A tick usually only passes on disease after it's been feeding for 12-15 hours. If the tick is flat, he probably hasn't fed too long... but ask your vet... If your dog has been vaccinated against Lymes disease, the test will show positive....

| The tick was definitely flat...it was not engorged. I'm pretty sure I caught it early..the tick's back legs werent even all the way in yet. I did call the vet and they said that a lyme's test wont show up this early. They told me to keep an eye on the area and make sure the area doesnt worsen. Also to watch his activity level and gate for any limping and his appetite. The good news is he's still a maniac, running all over the house and loves to eat! LOL

| No, lymes will take a while to show up anyways. Jackson has probably had 30-40 ticks on him over the course of 3 years, lol. We live in a highly infested tick area. He tested positive for lymes but we caught it early, it was really no big deal. Cleared up quickly with antibiotics. One tick being on a dog doesn't mean they have lymes or anything. And even so, a dog who doesn't have lymes CAN test positive for it. So it's kind of confusing. I wouldn't worry about it.

| I found one on Sheldon 2 days ago, I called the vet and she said not to worry and to watch him for the next few weeks and call back if he is showing any symptoms. Not all ticks carry the disease. This tick was flat as well. I check him all the time so he just probably had it for a little bit. |

| I live in a highly infested tick area. Ticks hang out in tall grass and wait for a warm body to go by and then jump on. Try to keep your dog away from areas where the grass has not been mowed. Get a flea comb and run it through his hair whenever he comes in from outside. Those ticks are hard to kill. You have to use tweezers or crush them with something hard. I hate the thought of having to deal with them again this year. I would have no problem since Gracie does not walk in the tick areas but our cats bring them in and I have to run the flea comb through them whenever they come inside. The Frontline Plus for cats does not work on ticks so I have to be the tick catcher. |

| Could you describe how you removed it so that you got the head? Where did you put the tweezer points, etc.? I have yet to find one on Tibbe but am terrified one day I will and I need pointers for what to do.

| I didn't even think about the head when I pulled it, I was lucky enough I got the whole thing though. |

| Did you put the very ends of the tweezers right next to the dog's skin on the tick?

My furkids Donating Member | I have always grabbed the tick(with tweezers) as close to the dogs skin as possible...turn counter clockwise and pull...this should remove the entire tick...as for lyme...my vet told me the tick would have to be on the dog for 24 hours before it could be infected.

| When we were suddenly attacked by ticks a couple of years ago I had to find a way of removal that did not leave the head in the skin. I found one of these at my vet's office and it works well. You just slide it around where the tick is attached to the skin and twist it once and pull. Out it comes head and all! Yuck! Then I flush them. Never touch them with your fingers as they can be full of germs. Amazon.com: Tick Twister: Pet Supplies |

| Yeah, that's what I did, I turned when I pulled and my vet told me the same thing about the 24 hr period for lyme. The tweezer I used has a wide flat end, not the kind that is pointy. Like this one here Amazon.com: Kotobuki Japanese Fish Bone Tweezers:... |
