| Is my dog a Yorkie or a Silky? Is my dog a Yorkie or a Silky? Its baffled us for a long time. Silky qualities -size: Coco is bigger than any yorkie i've ever seen. about 1' (30cm) from floor to withers about 1.5' (45cm) from chest to tail he weighs about about 10-12lbs (roughly 5-6kilos) -fur: is extremely soft and silky. Exactly what one would expect from a so called "silky" terrier -length: coco has an elongated body. His chest is prominent and low. different from the "squarer" look that i've seen in most yorkies -colour: coco is the cream and blue colour of a typical silky Yorkie qualities -Floppy ears: Coco doesnt have the trademark triangular ears that are typical of silky terriers. but then again, i dont see too many yorkies with floppy ears either. -Face: Coco has a typical yorkie face (although this could be nature of haircut.) -when we bought him the seller claimed he was a yorkie :S Anyways, I've attached some pictures. What do you think? |

| He looks like Yorkshire to me. From the pictures, he doesn't have the attributes of a Silky. Look up pictures of Silkies. Yorkies have sweet look, Silkies not so much, in my opinion. |

| I am not an expert, but to me she looks like a yorkie that is just larger than standard. A show yorkie needs to have their ears up but there are tons of yorkies with floppy ears, some even with one of each and they are cute as button as is your Coco.

| Yorkies can be bigger, have silky coats, and floppy ears. My yorkie is 16 pounds and has floppy ears.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Many "Breeders" have been breeding yorkies back to the silky lines and this type of pup is the product, nor a yorkie or a silky, but a mix of both with more yorkie than silky traits or vice versa, WE the silky breeders are calling them mutts, but the designer Breeders call them "silkshires" and demand big bucks for them.. your pup is adorable no matter what, but thank to this kind of breeder unless we know the blood lines now we need DNA testing for both breeds.. more often than before.. sorry for the rant.. I am just frustrated with the bad breeding that is going on.. hugs, |

| To me, the Silky has a somewhat more down, longer, doggier face and taller head with ears placed a bit more forward on the head than the Yorkie and your dog, though, of course any breed has pet quality dogs that don't have the AKC conformation. Your baby just has a Yorkie look to me, though it is possible he is a Silky.

| This is a picture of my daughters silky after a grooming I am sure Carmen could probably post some better ones for us so she could see the difference in the breeds.

| I say he's a Yorkie with cute floppy ears. I love the floppy ears (as you can tell from my Lucy's picture). Your baby is a cutie pie.

| Remember, Yorkies USED to be larger! And it is not uncommon the get "throw-backs" when breeding Yorkies, even from long established lines! Usually, when a breeder gets these really large babies from a breeding pair, we do "test breedings" to see if another breeding between the same two dogs consistantly produces a larger than standard acceptable puppy. If it does, we perhaps do not breed that pair again, as the object of this is to be breeding dogs that are true to the breed standard. These larger babies are STILL pure bred Yorkies, with all the personality attributes of the precious, endearing Yorkie breed, and make fabulous pets for families with children! |

| I'm guessing my Brandi is leaning more towards the silky terrier as she has a lot of the characteristics. She's a rescue so I don't know what her background is. It doesn't matter to me what she is so long as she is healthy and happy. |

| I love these threads. My Abby is an AKC registered yorkie- but I have always had my doubts about her looks. We saw her parents and she does resemble the dad. Carmen's comments about silky being bred back into yorkie lines make sense, the pictures of her new pups have really clicked with Abby's looks. Nanahas3's picture says a lot also.We choose her for her sweet easygoing personality not her looks but now it makes more sense. |
