| Nervous Puppy - car sick My puppy and I have been together about 4 weeks now. He is 5 1/2 months old. He is a nervous puppy and shakes when he is unsure of something. He threw up when coming home from the breeder and the next day when he visited the vet. I was using a carrier, but have tried travel a few times with him on my lap in the backseat and alas, no throwing up. I've tried a Thunder Shirt, but that doesn't seem to help. When I needed to drive this week, I had my son hold him on his lap in the backseat and he threw up again. So, it really does seem to be related to his comfort level. Any suggestions? I feel like "Driving Miss Daisy" with my husband chauffering us to puppy class each Saturday! I'm not sure of his weight. One month ago, he was 2.75 lbs., so he is on the small side. Thanks for any suggestions that anyone might have! Sandy |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Aww. Poor baby. My Amara used to be really nervous when I first put her in cars. She grew out of it though. Maybe he just needs some more time. I wish I could offer something. I think I let my baby feel the air from the cracked window. And she started getting better at riding in cars. I know I held her alot and talked sweetly to her while she snugged up to my neck. But your baby is older. Maybe someone more experienced can help. Maybe you should look up aromatherapy drops. I think I saw some somewhere that were for show dogs. But what do I know. I'm just a newb. Have a great day.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I only had one ever get sick in the car, and that was as a pup and he grew out of it. I'd try a couple things. First, get him used to liking the car. Maybe take him out sometime when you're not driving and play with a toy in the car with him. If he's nervous about being in the car, that could be causing the upset tummy. That might explain why he's better when someone's holding him -- he's not as nervous. Long term, you might look into an elevated car seat that allows him to look out the window. It's safer than being on a lap, and he'll learn that it's his safe place. Then just gradually increase length of car trips. Maybe just drive him around the block, then a trip to the store, adding length to the trip each time.

| Does he like puppy class? Is there some where else he likes better that you could take him? Maybe take him on short trips a little more often so he gets used to the fact that traveling can be fun. If you only go once a week it's harder to get him accustomed to travel. When Gracie was going through her "I hate the car" stage I had to put her in the carrier in the back seat. I put her right in the middle of the seat and she would sit and listen to us talk up front. It seemed to calm her that she could not see outside but she could still see and hear us up front. He does sound like he is having a bit of separation anxiety. |

| Sandy, one of our Yorkies was fine in cars, the other would always be woozy and "out of it" on rides, teetering on the edge of being sick. She outgrew it once she got used to being in the car and as she grew older, and just loves it. It makes her day to go for a car ride now. I would suggest small trips to start and be really, really patient. You have a little guy who is new to a lot of things including being in a car, the motion, the noise etc. He will be fine in time I am sure, as he gets confidence and used to it. |
