I only had one ever get sick in the car, and that was as a pup and he grew out of it.

I'd try a couple things. First, get him used to liking the car. Maybe take him out sometime when you're not driving and play with a toy in the car with him. If he's nervous about being in the car, that could be causing the upset tummy. That might explain why he's better when someone's holding him -- he's not as nervous.

Long term, you might look into an elevated car seat that allows him to look out the window. It's safer than being on a lap, and he'll learn that it's his safe place.

Then just gradually increase length of car trips. Maybe just drive him around the block, then a trip to the store, adding length to the trip each time.
