Default Things you dislike about dog/Yorkie ownership

To be honest, there's not a lot I dislike...

But, I would say that the worse part of owning a dog... is the having to leave him part. LOL. I don't really like to leave him, and would love if he could always just be with me but, well, life happens and he can't be with me 24/7. But even when I really want to go somewhere and go away and have fun, I always have him in the back of my mind, and it makes me want to get home sooner than I would if I didn't have a dog to get home to, ya know? Vacations would be a lot less stressful, haha! Lucky for me I do know he's in good hands, as he stays at my dads house, but STILL - it's not ME, and I miss him!

I guess picking up poop is not a lovely thing when having dogs, haha...

Oh and worrying about them when they are sick or not well is the worst! And their short lifespans!

I guess that because this is where I am right now,I really dislike the getting old part. The end of life stuff. I have had to PTS 2 of my furfriends in the last 11 months. I have a dog that has a torn ACL and is requiring alot of crate time. I also have another dog that has an enlarged heart and not doing to well. However my 1yrold yorkie baby makes up for alot of the part that I dont like. She is a joy to us all, even when she is torturing the other dogs to play with her.

The worst thing is when they get sick.

I dislike meeting inconsiderate strangers when out walking them (four of them).

They stop and tell me how lovely they look all together then bend over them shoving a hand into my Yorkies face or going to rub my puppies backs and saying stupid things like "coochie coo" and crap like that. This scares the hell our of my kids.
Then there are the young children walking with parents and the kid stops to make a fuss of the puppies without asking for permission to do so and Mum just looks on.
If my kids thought they were under attack and turn to defend themselves I would be accused of have uncontrolled dogs.

Otherwise I love having my dogs.

i agree... i hate leaving mine too. wish they could go everywhere with me! i also have a great dad that's willing to watch my babies anytime and is very yorkie experienced. it breaks my heart when i have to be away from them still though.
the absolute hardest part of pet ownership is when they pass. it is always way too soon and so painful. they really do take a peice of our heart with them when they go. secondly, the hardest part is when they are sick, and you have to make decisions for their care. hoping you're doing the best thing and making the right decisions can be very hard and stressful.
all this being said, i still would not trade being a doggie momma for anything!

Leaving them . . .even just to go to work . . .and especially when me and DH go on vacation . . .I never felt the way I do about any other pet that I have owned . . .we had cats and a staffordshire terrier in our 25 years of marriage and I NEVER felt bad going away . . .strange how these little guys affect our lives so much. Maybe it's because I look at them as my "babies" and they seem to understand me and know what I'm saying . . .

The fact that they live such short lives is very difficult. I had to say goodby to my 15 year old Shih Tzu a couple of years ago. It's so hard and while Gracie is still young I know how fast the time can seem to go.

I never felt fear when walking a dog in public until I had Gracie. A child or large dog approaching at a rapid pace is frightening. You don't know their intent and I usually pick her up with a racing heart when that happens.

Leaving her for long periods is difficult. I don't do it very often but when I do she is shaking when I get home. It makes me feel awful. It has to be done and she gets over it after a short time. My daughter has told me how Gracie pouts while I'm gone for short periods of time. She lays with her head on her paws and watches the door. She's a good little silly dog and there is nothing that is really bad about having her.

I love this thread!

Um... I'd have to say dealing with diarrhea!! I don't mind picking up poop.. as long as its solid (and not in the house like diarrhea usually is!)

I hate it when Brandi gets sick. I feel so helpless. I hate seeing her in any kind of pain.

I also hate cleaning her little butt especially when she gets diarrhea.....ewwwwwww! Those are the two things I dislike the most.

Potty training
Taking them out, esp. when it's 0 out
Walking them
Picking up poop
Dealing with barking
Tons of dirty laundry
Brushing
Brushing teeth
Nails
Anals
Trying to keep interactions with them and other animals or people, civil
The crazy, won't settle down, state when they get excited (this is when they scratch and jump)
Maneuvering them through vet offices and such
Have two to maneuver now!
Making sure they aren't going to decide to go off on someone
Always needing to think of them when I want to do the slightest thing
Needing to be very obsessed about diet and health with both

LOL. Not sure why I even have dogs.
I think they are cute and I like to cuddle.

Having a yorkie(or any dog for that matter) takes a lot of work. It's really ongoing work, but it's a labor of love. There's really nothing I don't like about having Bailey. He is so mild mannered and loving. He still needs some training, but for the most part he's a big part of our family. If I had to pick anything, I'd say his some times stubborn streak. But, I guess that's a terrier thing.

All of the above and... the lack of responsible dog ownership I see by those who own large dogs. I no longer feel safe walking my four all at the same time, as there is no way I can protect them all from charging loose dogs.

One neighbor will not use a leash on her Rottie. She has spent thousands on reconstructive surgeries as a result of a brother X sister accidental breeding (she was not the breeder) and I just don't 'get' it. What is she trying to prove? The dog in no way has 100% recall, and has gone after two of my dogs. So I have to be sure she is not out when I walk my dogs.

I live on a back road that dead ends at the river. I guess people think it's safe to let their dogs be off leash due to lack of traffic. People also dump their unwanted dogs in this neighborhood. I never know what I'm going to face going out for a walk.

Another neighbor threw a party and a guest came with her two tiny poodles. My neighbor's big dog got out of her yard, went to the party, grabbed and shook one of the poodles killing it instantly, to the horror of all the children and adults that were there and saw it happen.

The whole neighborhood is aware that this happened. I would think the big dog owners would be more careful/considerate with their dogs but, no, it's more my fault for having small dogs that resemble rabbits.

I agree that leaving them is hard. I also hate when there sick and when they are recovering from surgery or are in pain. It also sucks watching them get shots.

Bad things about having Yorkies are: When they get hurt, sick, or die. Sometimes they can be, hard to potty train, or bark too much. And UCK, when they roll in nasty dead stuff. Or when they think they are a big dog and try to bully really big dogs
I think the 'bad thing' list is pretty short, compared to the 'why I love Yorkies' list. True, Yorkies change your life, like any other committed relationship we are in. We might have to give up this or that (like staying in with a good book, to take them out) but it is so worth it. Having a Yorkie love you is so humbling and very wonderful.
