| Dog farts! I dislike the dog farts. Especially the really nasty ones that happen in the cab of a truck and that are so bad you have to roll down the window. And all the worrying about them. |

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I wish I was better at potty training...that's a big thing that I dislike...but it's my fault. I too hate leaving them! Ugh...even for errands or normal stuff...they always walk to the garage door w/ me, and I'm getting my shoes on and grabbing my purse - and then they all just stop and look at me, SHOCKED, like "WHY on earth do you leave like this? Why? You should be with us every second, here in our home. We miss you already, Momma!" -- I swear, that's what they're saying. I can't leave the house without saying "I love you, I'll be right back" (no matter how long I'll be gone).

| Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Well so far, there is not much that I do not like about dog ownership. LOL. I just don't get overjoyed when it comes time to pay vet bills, but I know it is a must and it does not bother me. I do hate how some people I have met in public look down on us or even have the nerve to make a rude comment. I just want to smack them over the head. As for cleaning up when they are sick, doesn't bother me a bit. Katie Scarlett got a round of vomiting one day a couple of months ago. I was right with her the whole time. I didn't just sing for joy when I scrubbed vomit off of the carpet, but hey, it has to be done. And my husband is just as good. While she was sick, he held out his hands so he could catch it so I wouldn't have to scrub another spot on the carpet. I know it's not pleasant, but we love our girl so much, we'd do anything.

| In all honesty, I would say that it took Troy a long time for him to get potty trained. I don't like that yorkies have bad teeth and I could certainly do without people always in my face asking about how much I paid for him. I think I do worry more as he is smaller. I like that my yearly vet expenses are cheaper, his food is cheaper and I can take him everywhere without detection.

| Very good thread! Made me think. Many of the things others have mentioned, I don't really care for...the worry, the bills, the accidents, the demands when I want to do/am doing something else. But for me, my dogs are my lifestyle. I don't plan vacations that don't include the dogs, I don't plan outings that don't include the dogs...in fact there is very few times I ever have to leave them, and because my father is retired and lives with me, there is almost always someone home with them. I grew up with small dogs (had 2 chi's) and the only time I didn't have a pet was the 4-6 years of university...and in many ways was the worst time of my life. As a young working adult, I couldn't properly care for a dog, so I got a cat...which I loved, but it wasn't the same...I can honestly say that I will not under any circumstances live my life without a dog in it for as long as I can physically/financially manage the care...and I will go without a lot in order to have a dog...I wouldn't trade a single thing for them...sickness, demands, vet bills, inconveniences, and worry aside...they are beyond worth everything I have to give up in order to have them in my life. |

| I agree with everyone here leaving her alone is the hardest. Shes a bundle of energy but will pretty much just sleep till i get home. I was nervous about getting everything right, she's my fist dog and at one point i was buying her everything under the moon - things that she didnt even need. Now i've fell into my groove of dog ownership and can breathe a little easier, still a very protective mommy but not obsessively so. |

| LOL After 5 yorkies, my list is quite long. Here are some quick things that come to mind 1. Expense, from the purchase price to vet bills and all the other little things, like toys, treats, training classes, etc. I probably could have gone on vacation to Europe, Australia, and the Orient for what I have spent in the last 25 years. 3. Emergency runs at night to the ER vet for stuff like chewing up a lamp cord. 2. Weekly baths and grooming 3. Potty accidents, renting carpet cleaners, needing to the leave the house on time, only to spot at the last min. a pee puddle on the bedroom carpet, having to get rid of all my throw rugs since they were being mistaken for piddle pads. 4. Barking at anything that goes by the house. 5. Worrying every time the front door opens that a dog might escape and in my bare feet and underwear I will have to run down the street after him or her, because no matter how much I spent on training classes a rouge squirrel still makes the best yorkie go weak in the knees. 6. Spending 10 min before I leave the house, closing doors and picking up anything that might find it's way into the mouth of the 6lb living breathing vacuum cleaner. 7. Finding a safe, and not expensive place for them to stay while on vacation. 8. Handing out house keys to half the neighborhood in case I can't get home in time to let the dog out 9. Sleeping on the very edge of the king size bed while the dog sleeps sprawled out sideways in the middle between my husband and I. 10. My husband rubbing my dogs back in the middle of the night instead of mine! 11. And it goes without saying, eventually having to say goodbye forever to the little furball that has stolen your heart. In spite of all the expense and the things that are a PITA, it goes without saying life without my little sidekick would not nearly be as much fun. Last edited by DBlain; 02-23-2012 at 07:50 AM. |
