Confused Housebreaking your dog in 7 days ???

Ok, I ordered this for my Kindle and it says to keep them in the kitchen and earlier where the family is the most. We are in the family room, it is in the back of the house, as of now I am still taxing Prissy out to potty since it is a long way to the door and she gets all excited if I just let her go, but she doesn't go straight to the door. So you know what happens then!!! Anyway will it work if I keep carrying her to the door or should I just suck it up and let her go to the door herself? Yes I know I am having issues with housebreaking my little girl but I do everything on a schedule and she is doing pretty good. Well the other day she peed outside and then came in the family and peed again, now what is up with that. Oh and they say when you see them about to do their business to say no and hurry and pick them up and take them out. Well dang Prissy runs and there is no way that we can catch her, she runs like a greyhound.

She has a play pen and likes to nap there through the day but sleeps in her crate at night and seems fine with that. Sorry this is so long but I just had to put this out there and see if you all can figure out what all I am doing wrong. She is just a little over 4 months and we love her so much. I just want to be a good mommy and do what is right with her...

Oh and I realize that she won't be trained in 7 days, although I have seen on here that some have been house trained very young. My girl is hyper and loving...

I was not successful with housebreaking Charlie ( he's 16 months) till I put him on a leash. That has worked beautifully for us. He would go out and run and play and come back inside and wet on the kitchen floor!! It was so frustrating to me!
Now I take him out, on his leash, to the same spot and we just stand there till he does his business...I take him out every 2-3 hours. Initially I gave him a treat now I just tell him what a good boy he is!! When inside I have to keep him with me at all times
or he will sneak off to a corner or under the couch..!?!?! I sometimes wonder if he has me trained?? Haha I keep telling myself he is still young, but I do wonder if I will ever totally trust him to be housebroken? I hear so much about yorkies being hard to housebreak...? But for now, the leash seems to be a huge help. I also used belly bands every night in the beginning. That helped teach him to hold it till I took him out in the morning. He did not like wearing that wet!
It is an ongoing effort still but I feel he is making progress!!
Good luck!!

Thank you for replying, I do think Yorkies or most toys are hard to house train..Prissy is very head strong and if she misbehaves I do put her in time out in her playpen for a few seconds..I too wonder sometimes if she isn't training me...she is surely a handful.

Well I have to say I am happy to read this thread.

I was getting to think I was the only person with this problem.

I have four little babies three of which will go potty outside. They tell us by going to the outside door in the room we live in mostly (Conservatory).

When we open the door we say "wee wee's kids" and all four run out.
They do whatever it is they want then come and knock at the door.
We can see them outside on the patio so we know they have been toilet.

When we let them in one of the girls pees on the carpet. She will actually look at you in the eye whilst doing it. (not shy this girl).

We yell "NO NO" and pick her up and put her outside again.

She will stand in the spot you put her down on and just look at the door until we open it and invite her in.

This little lady is six months old and proving so difficult to potty train.

I am told it will eventually happen and we are doing things right (by the so called experts) but it is going to take time.

I sympathise with your problem and understand your frustration but why it is always the females we have difficulty with....hmmmmmmmm....

Love

I don't have this book but I will say that I literally have strudel with me 24/7. I watch his every move and in 2 weeks of being here he has only had one accident in the house. I take him out often but I don't stay out long. I don't want him to get 'potty time' confused with 'playtime'

I give him a treat for potty outside, and it's the Ferrari treat that he only gets then, different from his training treats. He now LOVES to potty outside, and two days ago he actually went to the door!!

I definitely wouldn't say heis house broken yet, but consistency and patience will pay off Joyce!!! Just keep at it she will get it.

Another member mentioned hanging a bell from the door. I am going to try this. This is our next step getting him to go to the door consistently

I know and I have a bell..I also have a problem with her acting really hyper when we have company, she wants them to pick her and then she is all over them and acting like a nut job..My son said that she needed a teether made of Prozac that she could chew on. I hate that she is doing this and i do have to work on her commands too. We are all going to the beach in June and I have to have Prissy acting like a good little girl..

I admit the book Yorkie for Dummies is really good, it does tell you how to ignore bad behavior and what words to say and act when they do good..I guess I was getting frustrated and felt like I was doing something wrong..I do watch her continually when she in out of the playpen and crate.

It does make me feel better that I have all of you and have your support. I am determined to get her house trained and to have good behavior and not be a dog that people want to get away from. I want them to love her like I do, she is really only calm when she is on my lap or in my arms, in her playpen and crate,,she also acts hyper with my DH too. She won't sit still for him at all.

I do disagree with you here. I do not believe you need a dog trainer.

The best action would be to send her over to me for about 18 years see how she develops.

She is precious, just needs some training, well so does my DH, he gives in to her so I will have to have him get on board with me...thank you all for listening to all of my ranting..

I see several have checked this thread but didn't post..I guess b/c it has been brought up so much. I really just needed moral support and just need to do what needs done.

My shih tzu was very difficult to housebreak - he would look right at me as he did his business and wouldn't even stop if I said "Uh Uh!" He'd even keep peeing as I carried him outside. He finally figured it all out and was housebroken around 8 months old....

Belle came to live with us in Feb last year and we had sooo much snow and it was so cold that I decided to use pee pads. She got the hang of it with in a few weeks (not 7 days ) and once the weather improved we started outside training. She is dual trained, and actually prefers to go outside now - she even barks to ask to go out

Good luck with Prissy. One day it will all just click for her!

I really don't think a breed can be difficult to housetrain. I do believe that because of their small size they are often treated differently than larger breeds.

Oz has actually been really easy to train, but you MUST be vigilint, 24/7. He's 10 months now and every single morning he is carried to the back door to go potty. Not that I don't trust him at this point, but it's just such a habit! I don't see any problem with carrying them TO the door, but put him/her down at the door and say something like "outside" or "potty time" so they will associate the word(s) with going outside. After going outside, you can let them roam around for about 20 minutes, then into crate or pen or at least watched every single moment to look for signs they need to go out again. I would take the pup out every two hours at least to begin with, but don't play outside, and don't stand out there for hours. Walking on the leash is a great idea. The exercise is likely to make them want to "go" more. Good luck!

It will get easier. In the first few weeks we had Oz I thought it was never going to work (and 7 days will not happen, EVER). But now we can't remember the last time he had an accident in the house (been at least 2-3 months... right after we moved). My complaint now is that the only way he tells us he has to go out is that he sits and looks at us. I would love to get him to learn to use a bell or some other signal. But he does understand "outside" and will run to the door when I say it.
