| I think we did something wrong but it's too late I am the proud parent of a 10 week old yorkie/ maltese cross and he is amazing. Smart, beautiful, sweet. But I think we got him from what I've heard is called a *backyard breeder* We were rather impulsive when we decided to get a dog and picked him from an ad in the classifieds. The lady said she was a registered breeder- which I know she wasn't because he isn't purebred. Something from the get go made us go *hmmmm* but when we went to go get him, it was clean, the puppies were happy and active and she had other pets- it seemed fine. Plus we fell in love. But since, I've noticed she has posted 3 additional litters. That seems like alot. I'm concerned that she is impregnating the mothers too much and I wonder what that does to the babies. Is there anything I need to watch for? The vet said he was healthy. I've had health concerns with previous dogs and I don't want to see anything happen to this little guy. His eyes tear alot. Is that normal as well? Besides that, he is active and eating well. I adore him. |

| Welcome to YT and congratulations on your new puppy. I'm not sure what you might mean by "registered breeder" unless you mean that the puppies are registered. But with a mix breed that could not be possible. As for the tearing eyes are you making sure the hair is not in the eyes? Also, it could be allergies. The only one of my three that has teary eyes is Pebbles and she has horrible allergies to foods.

and Bear too! ♥ Donating Member | Congratulations on your new puppy, and welcome to Yorkie Talk! Sophie and Ziggy are Yorkie/Maltese and I think they came from a puppy mill , but I didn't know it at the time. They both have watery eyes too. I keep them wiped daily and that seems to help. Good luckl with your puppy! Stephanie

| congats on the puppy, my friend just got a morkie and they are very cute. Sounds like you got a healthy playful one and that is most important. Hopefully this is not off topic but the OP speaks to a question so many ask, did I buy my puppy in the right place or where should I buy a puppy. People ask me all the time where to get a dog like my Lola, and frankly I don't even know what to tell them. Buying a puppy has gotten so difficult because it is very hard to know who to trust and you hear so many conflicting things. Many of the breeders I hear people refer to as reputable are also in it to make money, why not, after all it is not cheap or easy to breed puppies, most people don't want to go to the trouble to loose money. Some people like to buy from show breeders, they are usually reputable but often you have to wait quite a while and wind up getting a boy when you wanted a girl (LOL personal experience) you also wind up spending thousands of dollars which does not insure a long life of great health or personality (again personal experience) They say don't buy from pet stores (I agree) they also say don't buy from puppy mills (also agree) they say don't buy from back yard breeders. So I can't help but wonder where puppies are supposed to come from since i have never seen a good puppy farm or puppy factory, most seem to have been bred in someones kitchen or backyard. So what's left for the person that wants a toy breed puppy that does not cost in the $1,000.00's |

On a final note often a breeder like this has several females so they could still have several litters but from different set of parents, so hopefully she is a for profit breeder that has good business and breeding practices. You situation sound a little similar to mine. Lola is half yorkie half pom and this time I bought with little knowledge of her background. The woman selling her, which I did not know until I got there, sold several types of puppies for people she "claimed were friends" in the northern part of my state. Her place was clean and she had nice healthy looking puppies. Since I could tell Lola was the 4 months she claimed to be and looked healthy I took a chance and paid $450.00 for her. I was also at my vet's when the office opened the following day. She had a full checkup including stool and bloodwork, and thankfully was given a clean bill of health. At 14 months, she is not only the best dog I have ever had, but was the cheapest. I am hoping that you have the same good fortune as I had. Donna | |

| Thanks everyone! I appreciate your responses and feel better... I feel bad about possibly supporting someone who is mistreating these beautiful dogs and reaaally hope she isn't. All the animals there seemed happy, healthy and well taken care of so hopefully she is a responsible breeder. And he is awesome! As much as I know we should have looked more carefully before we made the leap to buy him, I am so glad we did! I adore him! |

| Congrats! I think you will have a very pretty little thing when he grows up as well as a cute little guy now! My rescued shih Tzu came straight to me at 6-weeks of age after a puppymill raid. She has very few issues. I have always said that she has been healty as a horse once I stopped feeding her grapes. She is very shy and quiet around strangers. We wondered if she even knew how to bark for the first few weeks. Now that she is a grand old lady of almost 13 years she has had cateracts and glacoma which required an eye removal but she has done very well since then. I would even venture to say that in total we have spent less money at the vet with her than any other dog we have had. Good luck with your little one and post some photos for us.! |
