Question What is recovery like after being neutered

Our Dex goes in Friday Morning to be neutered.
What should we expect for recovery?

hi , well basically you just need to keep him quiet for
a few days. make sure he is not licking the incision
and keep an eye on it for reddness and swelling.
if he is the only dog you should be fine
but if you have other dogs try to keep them from
playing together till his incision heals.
my oscar bounced back real fast.
he had the surgery at 8 am and was home at noon.
Oscar was nuetered at 13 weeks and within a few days
he was acting like nothing happened.
don't worry Dex will be fine...

Pretty much what the previous poster said except I hope she meant 13 months instead of 13 weeks.

My Brandi was pretty groggy when she got home and was pretty much out of it the rest of the day. She slept all day. By the next day she was moving around and by the third day except for a little soreness, she was pretty much back to her normal self. Just keep an eye on the incision and no baths. I wished I would of gave Brandi a bath before her nueter because boy did she stink. I ended using those moist towels because I don't think she couldn't even take stinking so bad.

hi, no 13 weeks is correct.
i know some people think that is too young
but it was the right decision for us.
oscar was constantly mounting our spayed shih tzu
she didn't appreciate it and attacked him several times.
i talked it over with my vet and decided to go
with the nuetering.
after about a week he was fine and
no more mounting behavior ...

Brew went in for his snippy on January 6. They kept him overnight which i think was great because he needed the down time i think. he is 7 months old and 9 pounds.

he was pretty well back to normal when i picked him up the next morning. he ate normally and went to the bathroom normally (which is something our vet said to watch for...some get the runs, some get backed up)

One tip out vet said to me was to try to take him out to the bathroom on a leash for the first 5 days or so, so that he is not ripping around too much.

i found it tricky to keep him from jumping up on things. he didn't seem to think he was in recovery mode.

His stiches came out the following Saturday and that took all of 10 seconds.

the craziest part of it was when we went back in to the vet to get the sitches out, he was actually wagging his tail and happy to be in there! he has always been so nervous at the vet, i thought after the big snip he would be 10 times worse. NOPE tail wagging away as the vet took him in.

Your boy should do just fine.

oh one more thing i learned from Yorkie talk was to get bloodwork done before the surgery to make sure all his levels are in line. My vet didn't even mention it to me, but when i brought it up they said it was a great idea. (i think most people are just trying to get out of there for a cheap as possible)

Good luck!!!

Riot had three baby teeth that needed pulled that were done when he was neutered, as well as microchiped. He was pretty out of it and lethargic the rest of the day. The next morning he was still pretty tired but by afternoon he was almost back to his normal self. I actually picked up all his toys and bones so he wouldn't be tempted to play.

The vet gave me an e-collar so he wouldn't lick/chew the incision be he wouldn't even move with it on, just stood there with his head hanging as low as it could with the collar on. I picked up a couple newborn onesies and put them on him backwards so his tail stuck out between the snaps, it was cute and he left the incision alone lol

Sprout was fine the following evening, and no measures had to be taken. The only time he was 'weird' was when the meds were still in effect. I honestly think the skinparents go through more of a healing period than the dog does. lol! It is us who worries endlessly until they are out of there. It's us with the high blood pressure due to worry. They get a little snippy-snippy and are sleeping the whole time, and then wake up to oodles and oodles of love and hugs and kisses and rubs and treats and toys and oohs and awws and such. They probably think neutering is the best thing since peanut butter.

Tibbe was sleepy next day after I picked him up, but the next day, normal so I had to move things so he could not jump onto couch, bed, etc., without my help. After a few days, I let him jump again.

My vet recommends as early as 5-6 months. I just had Bear neutered on Monday and he came home the same day. He will turn 6 months on the 30th. He came a come happy and hungry! He didn't even act like anything had happened! I have not really been able to keep him from playing. He hasn't been affected by it at all. He also had two baby teeth extracted!

Good luck!

Here's a pic of his incision:

Mine where spayed- Major abdominal surgery. They came home the same day also had retained puppy teeth removed. I used a premie baby ones on the to keep them from licking the incision site. I attempted to keep them quick by keeping them in a baby play pen. Cozy was fine the same day as her spay but a little sore- Ate and drank no problems- like nothing happened- I guess childbirth is worse. Roxy ate a little when she came home but just wanted to sleep- She escaped the play pen the day after surgery by jumping out. Zoey slept the entire first day she after the surgery except to go potty- I carried the princess outside and put her on the grass she did her business than picked her back up. She is the timidest if them all. She was back to her normal self within a week. They were not done by laser- Traditional method

I just had Buddy my rescued golden neutered- He did need pain meds. He is very sensitive.

My vet said even though spaying is more invasive for the females it seems to be the males who need pain meds most often.

OP are you getting your pup done by laser or traditional. I hear recovery from laser is much quicker and not as painful. Buddy was my first pet ever who needed post-op pain meds.

Ummm...but, isn't your Brandi a "she"...and so would have been spayed...not neutered, correct or did I mis-read something in your post?

Also, even the Humane Society spays/neuters animals much younger than my vet recommends. My vet will not do them earlier than 4 months because my vet believes they need the hormonal development until then...as do I.

My male dogs (and cats) that were neutered were in and out of the Vet's the same day, and except for maybe being a little sleepy and/or wobbly depending on how soon after the procedure I picked them up, you couldn't tell by their actions they'd had anything done. I kept them quiet, though, except for being unable to control one feral male cat who escaped the kennel while being transferred to the 'hut'...he was a very large cat and leapt from a 2nd story jalousie window to the ground (scared the bejeezes outa me! ) and was still fine afterward...thank goodness!

The females (bitches and cats) who were spayed, were all kept overnight in the Vet hospital for observation. Because females take longer to heal from a spay, they need to be kept calm for a longer period of time, and, in my experience, seem to suffer more than the males although all of mine have bounced back pretty quickly...and both procedures worry me for my babies! Only one female (a Shep/Lab) had problems and we rushed her to the animal emergency clinic only to have them say it was no biggie and to take her back to the vet the next day who said it was no biggie, too. (Whew!!!) One feral female cat with 11-week-old kittens at home let herself out of the cage at the vet's office (1998) and was never seen again after being spayed...my poor vet was freaked out! So, we are pretty sure she never had any more kittens, but could possibly have contracted rabies because they don't give the shots until after the spay.

I did take one feral cat to the vet for a spay, and when I called for an update, the Doc reported being "unable to spay the creature" ....but "was able to neuter the poor little guy, though,!" (I my VET's sense of humor !)

Plus, after 'helping' the ferals, we have not had a kitty overpopulation problem for several years !

I hope your little guy has no issues and recovers quickly. Plus, it will give you another good reason to lavish him with extra lovies! Good luck!

So Dex, went in at 8:30am, done by 12:30. Neutered, micro chip, Vaccine for kennel cough We picked him up at 4:30. He has been out of it and tinkled all over the couch and fleece. I guess they used IV fluids. He ate a couple of cheerios and had a couple of sips of water. Hope he is feeling better tomorrow. My daughter has him on the couch for the night.

Praying for little Dex, I know the side effects from the anesthesia can be a bit frightening to a caring Momma. All the best, keep us posted, Bubba will be neutered in a couple of months, I'd like to know what to expect. Again, prayers for Dex.
