Donating YT 500 Club Member | No not everything is safe. Anything like Visine is not ok... Sterile Saline solution is safe. In fact I bought eye wash for dogs at Petsmart and it has the exact same ingredients as Sterile Saline Solution.

| If this problem continues, you should take him to a vet to have the eye examined.

| Whether it's allergies or the climate conditions, two of my girls started having yellow like infection in their eyes so instead of going to the Vet. and spending large amounts on office calls and eye drops, I went to Wallgreen's pharmacist and ask him about this and what I can use. He said eye wash since it has an ingredient for infecton. It works beautifully! I'd suggest you buy a no tear shampoo for your little one.

| I would never treat an infection in the eyes of any of my pups with an over the counter product. A pup with drainage in his/her eye should be seen by a vet imho. Eyes are not something to mess with. An ulcer can develop and go bad overnight and they can lose their eyesight! As for over the counter products, your vet should always be available to discuss the ones with you that are ok for pups! I always call my vet for things that perhaps can be treated without being seen. You don't have to always take them in..

| I agree with LadyJane that if the eye is still red and he is still holding it shut, your pup needs to be seen by the vet. He could have a chemical burn that caused an ulcer. Maximo has had several ulcers. They are excruciatingly painful for the pup, and as LJ wrote, they can go bad very quickly. Max is very fortunate to not have any scarring or damage and that is mostly because I don't mess around. I take him to the doctor the second I think something is wrong, and that includes a little green or yellow boogies. FYI: Some drops, even medicated drops prescribed by a vet, can disagree with your pup's eyes. Max does not do well with sterile saline from the drug store.

I think the green boogers were caused by a wild hair growing out of the corner of his eye. With careful cleaning with a wet cotton ball, we were able to keep the hair from irritating the eye. Sometimes the cause of eye things are innocent, but often they are not. Plus, Max has had some bad reactions to eye drops, sterile saline and tri-thalmic solution. That is why I am always hesitant to tell people to try drops.
