I agree with LadyJane that if the eye is still red and he is still holding it shut, your pup needs to be seen by the vet. He could have a chemical burn that caused an ulcer.
Maximo has had several ulcers. They are excruciatingly painful for the pup, and as LJ wrote, they can go bad very quickly.
Max is very fortunate to not have any scarring or damage and that is mostly because I don't mess around. I take him to the doctor the second I think something is wrong, and that includes a little green or yellow boogies.
FYI: Some drops, even medicated drops prescribed by a vet, can disagree with your pup's eyes. Max does not do well with sterile saline from the drug store.
