| Just brought home a new Yorkie... We just brought home a baby Yorkie. She is currently 8.5 weeks old and we've had her about a week. So far, she's done really well. I'm new to the board and wanted to ask a couple of quick questions. She had her first trip to the vet this past weekend. She weighed in at 2 lbs 3oz. Our breeder said she would likely not get over 5lbs. I've seen a few weight charts that suggest she may get bigger than this. Our vet did not have an opinion yet. What are your thoughts on her current size and potential size, etc.? At what age will her ears begin to stand up? At what age should I begin to "motivate" them to stand up (if they're still floppy)? I was planning on taking her to the groomer once she has all of her shots. Is this typical? We are currently using a Potty Training Puppy Apartment for house training. Anyone used one of these? So far, it's worked well. She has not had an accident in her bed. She's using the potty pads when contained to the puppy apartment. She is 50/50 when outside of the apartment. I know she's still quite young and this will be an ongoing process. My goal is to eventually move her from the potty pads to outside once she gets older and the weather gets warmer. I know that some have conflicting thoughts on this transition, but we're going to give it a shot. Thanks for your help and I look forward to your comments. |

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | We use the Potty Training Puppy Apartment too and LOVE it! I bought it before we brought our Katie Scarlett home. She has done fabulous with it! She has never peed in her bed. Of course she has had the few accidents outside of it, but she learned very quickly. We got her at 12 weeks and she is now 6 months. I would say she is 99.9% of the way there. She may have an accident once in a blue moon, but it's very rare. We keep her PTPA set up in our den. She uses it mostly throughout the day. I do have 2 other pads set up throughout the house though. One in the kitchen, and one in our bedroom. That way if she has to go and she is not near her PTPA she has somewhere else she can go. She is doing great about going to the nearest pad. She is now 'graduated' to her big girl bed in our master bedroom at night. I keep the PTPA playpen set up around her big girl bed and there is a pad on one of those pad trays from Wal Mart in there and her water. She uses that pad at night and has done great. She does pee outside, but has only poopied outside once. We love our PTPA! It was worth every penny. We bought a bulk box of 150 pads, but we now use the pads that come from PetSmart. It's cheaper than ordering them online and paying shipping. I get a 150 pack at PetSmart when they are on sale for like $29 and they last us a long time. Of all the advice I've been given and I did the same....wait until all shots are finished before going to the groomers. You can go ahead and start bathing your Yorkie yourself though. I gave Katie Scarlett a bath the first night she was home and she gets a bath once a week. Go ahead and start brushing one to two times a day too. Get them used to the brush while they are young. As soon as you can, go ahead and start doing a top knot too if you want a top knot. I started that early and Katie Scarlett protested for a day or two. As soon as she'd get it out, I'd put it right back in. I think she finally figured out that it kept the hair out of her face and now she loves her groomings. She even gets in the down position and stays perfectly still while I do her top knot. You can start keeping nails trimmed to if you like, but I do not trim Katie Scarlett's myself. It just makes me so scared that I'll cut into the quick and they will bleed so I do not. I let the vet cut her nails or a friend who is a groomer. I keep them cut as I should, but do not do them myself. I know many YT'ers do though. As for the ears, I'm not sure on that one. But I know many other YTers can help you. Katie Scarlett's ears were up when we first go her. It was one of the things that made us fall in love with her. I just loved her ears! Welcome to YT! Hope I helped some! Would love to see pix of your baby!

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Congratulations on your new baby! Just a bit of info... As young as your pup is, try not to have any expectations as far as potty training. I brought home a 10 week old, and the first couple of weeks seemed more like "potty containment" than training. Once you choose to do outside, just be consistent, these fellas are smart and very capable Again, Congratulations!! |

| When it comes to how big she'll get, it's usually genetic. Most look at the parents and there parents to see about how big their baby will get. I don't really think those charts are too accurate.

| As far as size, I've also heard triple the weight at 8 weeks or double the weight at 12 weeks. i.e., 8 weeks 2.5 lbs = 7.5 lb adult or 12 weeks 3.5 lbs = 7 lb adult My pup will be 15 weeks old, so I have yet to prove the above formula. |

| Every Yorkie that I have ever had has been almost exactly the adult wt that the charts say but I have seen some here on YT who's babies did not reach the size the charts say & some who went way over. |

| Congrats on the little one. As for the ears, to encourage them to stand, keep the top third clipped/shaved down of hair and you can gently massage them several times a day. I don't know if anyone told you about blood sugar, but when they are very young they need to eat multiple meals a day to keep their blood sugar up. Nutrical is good to keep on hand. They are at risk of developing hypoglycemia. You'll have to post pics of your little cutie!

| Welcome to YT. About the ears, you can clip the fur from the top 1/3 or so. It's surprising how just the weight of a little bit of fur will weigh the ears down.

| I don't have a need for the PTPA, but I love the idea. |

| Thanks for the replies! Regarding the ears.... My pup is almost 9 weeks, and her ears appear to be very floppy! Is this still normal at this young age? See the attached pic of her, taken at 8 weeks. |

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | What a cutie pie! I like the floppy ears on Yorkies too. I know some never stand and they are still as cute as can be!
