Kiwi's Big Day (spay) So, today Kiwi is spayed and her 2 retained baby teeth pulled. My daughter has brought her to the vet, and I'll sit watching the seconds tick by 'til I hear from them. Her weight is still just under 2-1/2 pounds, but she is a feisty, spunky, tough little girl. She's never had any digestive troubles (diarrhea/vomiting) or adverse reactions to vaccinations other than a lump where she was given her rabies shot. She is very healthy, and I hold on to this praying she'll be fine. Her biggest eating time is first thing in the morning. I felt so bad not being able to give her anything. She didn't seem too upset. My daughter is here visiting for Christmas and brought her toy poodle. Tika is happily keeping Kiwi's bed warm while she's gone. Tika weighs 3-1/2 pounds. We got her when she was 3 years old and the breeder had bred her twice with resulting C-sections and dead babies. After the second pregnancy and loss, they spayed her and offered her for sale. I can't imagine even attempting to breed these tiny dogs no matter how small the sire is. It's just wrong. I guess if Tika can survive all of that, my Kiwi will be just fine. Thank you for taking the time to read my ramble. I'll let you know how she fares. I've asked that they call immediately after the surgery. She is the only surgery today and may be able to come home as early as 1.

Well, I was pretty discouraged yesterday when I posted hoping to gain some support while I waited for news on how my little Kiwi did. I was so nervous that it was all I could do not to call the vet and ask how she was doing. They did call immediately afterward and said she'd done well. Then I was jubilant! She was a pathetic little heap when she came home. Her eyes were wide open and she was motionless and making this soft, breathy long whine sound. I was a little worried that she was going into shock. I couldn't get her to eat anything. They did give her dextrose in her IV because her blood work showed slight hypoglycemia. Finally, the only thing I could get her to take in was, and this may be worse than not eating, vienna sausage. At least it was food and it was soft. She's never had anything junky before, and she sure thought it was good! Later she peed and walked around. I have 5 days worth of Metacam to help with the pain. She slept well last night. I did get up to offer her a pee break and some water. She was really thirsty. My husband works 2nd shift, and when he came in around 2 am she did give him wiggles and kisses as usual. and that was wonderful to see. This morning she is quiet but eating (vienna sausage) and sleeping. They ended up taking 4 teeth, and I would imagine her mouth is quite sore. Her gums are bruised in the front. So it's over. I'm so relieved about that, but at the same time feel so bad about what I put her through. I would have lost my mind if the outcome had been bad. This is just one more story about a wee one's spay that might help someone else get through this tough decision and see that it can go so well and be behind you. I do recommend the sevoflurane, an IV, preop blood work, and making sure they will be kept warm throughout the process. I was able to take her home at noon. My total cost was $360 with the baseline spay being $140. The extras were well worth it to me, and the IV came in handy to give her the dextrose. Merry Christmas to you all!

Awe, thanks everyone I was just feeling whiney and worried. She is doing so well today. All wiggles and kisses and loves. She's still holding out on her food for yicky vienna sausages, but tough love will come later. The only food I can get her to eat is Stella and Chewy's freeze dried for her normal diet. She is wanting her belly rubbed a lot oddly enough, and she's still sleeping a lot more than usual, but she's so much perkier than yesterday and her personality is back to normal. Thanks very much for the replies!

Oh you poor dear thing !!! I am so glad to hear everything went well and Kiwi is okay. Such tiny dogs are risky for any surgery, but especially when they are so small. My Yorkie-Poo back in the '70's was considered a bad candidate for anesthesia and he was maybe 7 years old and about 6-7 pounds, so 2 1/2 pounds would have worried me half to death. You must be pretty brave and strong yourself...not to mention patient ! It is a shame that Tika was put through two (2) pregnancies and lost litters following the C-sections, but I am certain that she is better placed now that she has such a loving new home where she can enjoy her new life. My best wishes to you, your daughter, Kiwi, and Tika...take care ! - Cat ... err ... and Brody and Mia

So glad your little one is doing better. Gracie also was a sad sleepy little girl when she came home after being spayed. It is such an awful feeling to see our peppy little girls acting so dejected. It is usually just one day and then they are on the upswing again. I wasn't here yesterday. I think a lot of people are getting into the holiday bustle and not here quite as much. Breeders who breed such little girls are heartless people who are out for money and care nothing for their dogs.

| I'm sorry I didn't see this yesterday. I know how scary it is when our little ones undergo any procedure with anesthesia. I never got used to my girls' yearly dentals, but I knew that they were necessary to protect their health. Sending special wishes to Kiwi. One of little ones was named Kiwi, and I wish you the love and happiness with your little girl that my Kiwi brought to me.
