Well, I was pretty discouraged yesterday when I posted hoping to gain some support while I waited for news on how my little Kiwi did. I was so nervous that it was all I could do not to call the vet and ask how she was doing. They did call immediately afterward and said she'd done well. Then I was jubilant!

She was a pathetic little heap when she came home. Her eyes were wide open and she was motionless and making this soft, breathy long whine sound. I was a little worried that she was going into shock. I couldn't get her to eat anything. They did give her dextrose in her IV because her blood work showed slight hypoglycemia. Finally, the only thing I could get her to take in was, and this may be worse than not eating, vienna sausage. At least it was food and it was soft. She's never had anything junky before, and she sure thought it was good!

Later she peed and walked around. I have 5 days worth of Metacam to help with the pain. She slept well last night. I did get up to offer her a pee break and some water. She was really thirsty. My husband works 2nd shift, and when he came in around 2 am she did give him wiggles and kisses as usual. and that was wonderful to see. This morning she is quiet but eating (vienna sausage) and sleeping. They ended up taking 4 teeth, and I would imagine her mouth is quite sore. Her gums are bruised in the front.

So it's over. I'm so relieved about that, but at the same time feel so bad about what I put her through. I would have lost my mind if the outcome had been bad. This is just one more story about a wee one's spay that might help someone else get through this tough decision and see that it can go so well and be behind you. I do recommend the sevoflurane, an IV, preop blood work, and making sure they will be kept warm throughout the process. I was able to take her home at noon. My total cost was $360 with the baseline spay being $140. The extras were well worth it to me, and the IV came in handy to give her the dextrose.

Merry Christmas to you all!
