I like your attitude too! They are all deserving of a good lifelong home!!! A purebred is no more worthy than a mutt. I have two mixes, and two purebreds and i love them all the same. And i wouldnt trade any of them for anything!! And the purebreds were given to me, i didnt go looking!! I cant wait for pictures!!!

Congrats on the new baby. We'd love to see pics.
Kendra I guess that it's time for me to jump on the bandwagon and agree with capt_noonie. My Doodlebug is a Morkie as well as a rescue. He was just a puppy when I brought him home and I can see how you would want to have a puppy to love. Morkie are adorable and I love my Dbug to pieces. But going to a breeder who is intentionally mixing dogs for no other reason that profit is just wrong. There are so many dogs that need home and rescues are begging for foster homes there just is no justification.

I have no doubt you will give your new puppy a wonderful home.

What you don't seem to understand, is that there is a difference between the breeders who breed the mutt and the purebred. One is doing it for the money and the other hopefully has studied the breed and is doing it because they want to improve the breed. Granted, you find lousy breeders breeding purebreds, but you won’t find any great breeders breeding crosses. You can't predict how a crossbreed will behave or look like as an adult, and so many, wind up at the pound. That is MY problem with people buying crosses from breeders. Morkies, may either look like a Yorkie or they can look like a Maltese, or anything in between, but because both breeds have many of the same illnesses, crossbreeding them doesn’t help you eliminate these diseases, in fact, because these breeders don’t check for problems, you may be increasing the chances. Many breeders breed crosses because they don’t have the breeding rights to their adult dogs, so they breed crosses, because they can’t be registered with the AKC anyway, and they just say, “parents were registered.” This is the same thing as buying stolen property, you are helping a thief. The very least you should do, is look at the breeders registration papers of the adults and see that it was on OPEN registration, not limited.

If you want a mixed breed, I suggest you look at breed rescues and even your local pound, many local pounds have websites and you can see what animals are available online. Of course, your free to do whatever you like, and reward a bad breeder with money, it's your choice, but I do have a problem with you seemingly encouraging others to do this as well, and your cavalier attitude about not caring about the breed in general, and where it's headed. If any of you have ever gone to the pound and seen the dogs that probably have less than a week to live, if someone doesn't adopt them, you'll know where I'm coming from. It's not a place of hate; it's a place of sadness for these dogs. I've adopted dogs all my life and Joey's the only dog I got as a puppy from a breeder, but I found a breeder who was really breeding for the right reasons, and not just to make a buck.
I agree with you on MANY levels. I thought a long time about a rescue. I looked at SEVERAL...but at the end of the day we decided on this pup. I am not going to go into a great deal of detail defending breeders who breed mixes. I know there are so many bad ones out there. This particular breeder I have visited with for months now. I have been to her home to basically be nosey and see what kind of "operation" she is actually running. I honestly like her. The daddy of this pup is an AKC parti yorkie. He is a beauty. The mother is also registered with AKC. Although, I realize there are a lot of people who disapprove of mixing it up, there is an equal number of people who like the mixes. Our little 3/4 yorkie, 1/4 shih tzu is a precious little girl. She is unique and I love that. I actually was waiting for a litter that was born last week of purebred AKC parti yorkies. We wanted a male. There was one beautiful male born, but he is almost identical to this morkie. I decided to take the morkie, just to have something a little different. I apologize if you think I dont care about the breed. I LOVE the breed. But, When we bring home our new little man, I want to share him with you and everyone else. I basically wanted to let everyone know what I was getting ...and yes, there will be those who frown upon it. But, I have to trust my own judgment.

(Very well put!)

Supporting a breeder that breeds mixes kind of encourages the breeder to continue making money on mixes. You can find a plethora of mixes at shelters.

I realize all doggies need love, and I do respect your decision but I don't think it's the right thing to support purchasing a "designer dog" which consequently is supporting a breeder. Especially when you can get the same kind of dog from a rescue and the money you pay goes toward a better cause (making space/providing funds for another rescue baby)

I'm happy you found a pup to love, and I would not judge you because you have a mixed breed. I have a parti yorkie and people never believe he is pure yorkie (they think yorkies only come in the traditional colors) so I just say he's mixed too

I guess my next questions then are:
The dam and sire, did the breeder have open registration papers on them? If yes, then I would suppose she then would be a breeder of maltese and yorkies, and this was an accidental litter. If no, and she had limited registration on the dogs, then she was supposed to have them altered and didn't and bred them anyway. Does she usually have litters? Of what kind of breed?

Don't get me wrong, no one ever said they looked down on the dogs, dogs of any breed or % of whatever. It's the breeders who do it for the money. Like Nancy had linked, there are many mixes out there available for a very small adoption fee. I would never pay more than a few hundred for a mixed breed dog, for the fact that there are SO many of them in shelters, rescues and pounds waiting for a good home, and these type of breeders are making it worse.

So please let me understand what kind of breeder you are supporting.

Kendra I thought your initial post of announcing a much loved and anticipated new pup was a bit "in your face" to the community here.

And in another subsequent early post "thanking those folks who bit their lips and kept their mouths shut"

I've yet to come across a post of anyone here belittling a member new or old for purchasing a cross-breed dog, aka a "mutt".

I believe that breeders be they purebred breeders, show breeders, mutt breeders, should be breeding healthy dogs, and do their utmost to insure this happens. That means to the best of your ability knowing the health problems in the lines you are breeding, doing all breed and if you are breeding "cross breeds" all the health tests on the breeding dam and sire and all the breed specific genetic and other tests available to help a breeder determine if there breeding pair is free of "x" y" or z".

Of course many, many of the aforementioned breeders do none of this. Show breeders are the most likely group to do those tests. The others are not in breeding for the betterment of the breed, what breed exactly is a mutt? Where are the breed standards for these "designer dogs". Nowhere to be found at all. Are Morkies bred to Morkies to improve and try to develop a "new breed" of dog" How many of those named designer breed dogs, just taking two "pure breds" and breeding them together willy nilly to get on the money bandwagon?

So who exactly did you support when you bought a designer dog? One who does everything possible to insure the health of the pups. Did the Parti Yorkie or Full Yorkie have at least a CHIC number, did the Maltese as well? What are the health concerns in each of their lines? Do you know? Does the breeder know?

I for one do not believe that this community belittles anyone for owing or loving a mixed breed dog, and I am saddened that you perceive it so.

Good luck and long love and enjoyment of your newest addition
