| First post- depressed puppy :( My 3 year old Yorkie, Coach, has been acting strange the past few days. I am a teacher and was home on Thanksgiving break and once I went back to school this behavior started. Keep in mind that I am also in grad school, teaching 3 classes, training to be department chair, and coaching 2 collegiate teams and my local university! I used to crate Coach during the day, but quit that last year (when I got the flu and was home for a week) so he has free roam of the majority of my house. I don't have any bathroom problems with him. But lately, he acts depressed (only way I can describe it). Monday morning he was fine, then when I got home from work, before going to practice, he wouldn't eat, he did go outside and potty, wouldn't eat his treat, and was super clingy. Once I came home from practice, he was fine. Tuesday morning was really clingy, and wouldn't eat treat before I left for work. When I came home before leaving to go to class, he was clingy and not as hyper as usual and when he went outside was eating grass (but never got sick). Came home from class and was fine. Wednesday, same thing. This morning, he'll hold his treat I give him in his mouth, and then come sit on my lap before I go to leave. He just stares at me. Am I crazy, or is my dog depressed because I've gone back to work after 5 days off?? And if so...what the heck am I going to do once Christmas break is over?? |

| Sonuds more like something maybe going on or hurting. I know Gizmo was more clingy when he had a bad tooth that needed to be pulled. I would have a vet check him out. He may just be missing you alot on top of a painful thing going on.

| It is probably just that she is a little depressed but its best to have a vet check to rule out medical reasons

| Not sure, but it does sound like he is depressed, and possibly lonely from being left alone. Also, welcome to YorkieTalk!

| A few days of change can seem like alot to these lil pups sometimes. My kids were both just home from University for Thanksgiving and ZoE was depressed when they left. She's depressed for a couple of days anytime either of them come home for a weekend and leave, which I find a bit unusual as she's not quite a year old and didn't grow up with them and has only ever seen them on weekend or holiday visits. So I know these lil pups can be sensitive to people and change. As your pup is 3 years old and you have a busy schedule, it seems like he'd be used to it. I'd probably have the vet check him over incase anything medical is going on with him that could be causing the change in behaviour.

| Sounds like he spends a very long time by himself and yes, they can get bored and depressed. Perhaps you could enroll him in doggy day care somewhere? I would definitely have him checked out by a vet though to be sure nothing is wrong. Good luck and welcome to YT.

| Thanks! Thanks everyone! My schedule hasn't always been this crazy, I got comfortable teaching and decided to go back for my masters, then fell into the coaching position at my old university :/. I always feel horrible leaving him, but hey, somebody's gotta pay the bills . He's due for his 3 year shots anyway, so we'll be making a trip to the vet today. Thanks again! |

Have him ck by a vet first . My Miley get depressed when I leave , but I do leave the lights on and tv for them. If she is mad about something she won't eat her treat , but Max on the other hand will eat his and Miley's treat any time. It always nice to have another furbaby , to play with. Or look in a doggy day care or a neightbor that's home all day. bark@ulater!!! manina, miley, max, reirei, andrudy | |

| I would have him checked at the vet soon....if all is ok try wearing an old t shirt around then when you leave let him sleep on it. Maybe your scent will give him comfort & make him feel like you are close. It worked with my daughter lab. Good luck. I do understand about leaving them alone & feeling guilty. Mine are with each other but I still feel bad about leaving them......I want to stay home too but like you said.......someone has to pay bills.......GOOD LUCK

| Wow, you are busy! My guess is that he is lonely. Have you looked into any doggie day cares? I don't think they are very expensive. Like others have said, you should see your vet if you are worried about his health. Yorkies are very loving animals and aren't real happy being by themselves. Good luck...hope you find something to make him happy.

| It's possible that he is really lonely. I would be if I was alone that much. But I would also be concerned that there is a physical problem as well. Is he going pee alright? Dogs that have to hold their bladder for long lengths of time are more prone to bladder infections. |
