Default Coco SSO and his hairy situation!

So as some of you on YT know, Coco Skittles Starburst Oquendo is a resuce yorkie. When he come to my home he was emaciated, his coat was dull, and all of his hair in belov his neck we uneven, broken amd even ahd patches of dry skin, scabs, and suffered a skin condition. Coco is finally workign his way to becoming as health a pet as he can ( was diagnosed with epilepsy and congential cataracts at only being about a year old! !) Still he is doign great.

Coco's coat is getting longer and this is where my dilema begins: My prior yorkie was a cotton coat so I often gave him a puppy cut because his hair would become unmanageable the longer it got. Coco SSO's current hair is not a cotton coat, but is long and straight and full (Dare I say 1000 percent healthier). I do not want to have his hair cut into a puppy cut or have the fortitude to grow a show coat. So I would love to hear any suggestions? Is there a happy medium cuz I love his hair as it is growing and do not want to cut it so short!

Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated! Also, I also want to attempt having a top knot for him (Wish me luck on that one)

Thanks in advance, Coco SSO's Dad!

Medium length is good and shows off a longer coat. It doesnt have to be show length and to be honest very few regular ordianary folks deal with hair that long. If mine had silky coats I would grow theres to like a medium length. I do keep the face hair longer on Jewels with a topknot even though her body is shaved.

Lamb cuts are great too. Head and legs are long but the body is shaved down. This cut is especially nice if your babies wear clothes a lot. This is my Gulliver with a lamb cut. You can have the head and legs left as long or short as you'd like and everything that would be under a sweater or vest is shaved down so no matting but since the legs are long it looks like he's got a full coat when he's wearing a shirt.

eta: Don't forget to tell them to leave the tail long too. I forgot the first time and they shaved his little tail down. I was SOOO mad. It's just now growing back in again.

Thanks so much for your input! I have never heard of the lamb cut until you mentioned it! Coco does not have his tail docked, so I think this would be a good option for him. He is a rather fashion forward (meaning clearance rack t-shirts from pet smart-shhh please don't tell him) so this looks like this may work!

I'm almost in the same exact predicament with Mojo. He is a rescue that I've had only about 3 weeks. He was living in a crate almost 24/7 and it was covered in feces and urine! I picked up the sheet that was thrown in there with him and it was soaked with it! His food dish was even covered in feces!!! He's been checked at the vets, but they found no problems for the wet dog smell he has. The only thing I can contribute it too was his diet and crate conditions, poor fella! His coat is in terrible condition. It is silky on his head, but his body is thicker and though not sure, thinking it's cotton or woolly. I'll b watching this thread for more ideas, though I like the lambs cut myself but with a few moderations. Mojo's tail wasn't docked either and the hair on his legs is getting long right along with his head hair, but it looks terrible. I think I might lamb cut him all over and maybe see if he has enough hair to make bangs. I hope this might get some of the bad, broken and smelly hair gone! I am so happy the hair on his head seems to be growing so fast and the tan is getting the color of gold the nearer the roots u get. Right in the tip top of his head it is getting a lovely silver color and in only 3 weeks has grown to fall in his eyes even though I try 2 part it down the middle. One shake of his head has him looking pretty frazzled again, lol. I haven't purchased a great shampoo and conditioner yet, but have been using a soothing lavendar combo. I'm going to be buying him a nice shampoo and conditioner tonight and his first grooming is next Tuesday as we had to wait so long after his neuter. I'll be so happy to show him off in pics then. Bless his heart, he is already housebroken in this short time, proving that any little doggie likes to be clean if given the chance. He is a sweetheart with a lively attitude and though I can't do much for him, I can love him and keep him as healthy and happy as possible. Can't wait to see more ideas here.

Trim the ends only.

The first time I took my dog to a groomer I brought along some pictures of what I was looking for. I also wanted to learn how to do it myself and the groomer was happy to give me a how-to lesson. I now cut him myself but it is always a work in progress. If you're interested in a longer style take a look at my profile album labeled Deuce. The second picture is the current style I'm happy with. I leave the legs long, trim the feet and cut the body down. I use a shaver with a blade attachment and then scissor cut and blend the body. It's kind of like a modified Schnauzer cut. He finally has a top knot and I leave some hair on his tail. I'm currently trying to grow the hair around his eyes because I used to trim that. His hair is quite silky all over. At this length I usually comb him out daily and never let it go for more than two days. Good luck on finding the perfect style!!!

Cheap safe conditioner-I only use organics.

I have only used it as an initial heavy conditioning treatment for skin & hair in conjunction with my dog wearing the Kiss E cone from Hot Rod's Mom, because if licked it doesn't cause diarriaha but it's a serious lubricant-in excess it can & will cause seriously loose stools, and help flush out the intestines rather quickly.

I like to use a little on the head regularly especially when trying to look extra special. I also use HPA lanolin because it really holds the eye hair we're growing out and is totally safe. But these are temperary remedy for photos but do have conditioning properties & prevent breakage for bow/top knot.

I prefer WEN now because we use it & love it because it works great is all natural made in USA in a solar & bio-powered organic laboratory...yes I'm one of those.

Yeah that and WEN is an evolution in hair cleansing it takes a month or for dog depending on cleansing schedule about 3 months for it to change the PH and to see the results the first couple times I thought it left hair greasy then fluffy then over conditioned but it evened out wonderfully!

Also consider Yorkie Splash & Shine your routine cleaning conditioning items-it's way cheaper than WEN and works phenomenally also!

Default Wow! Thanks for the info! I'm one of those 2...

LOL. I have several health issues and modern meds don't seem to help me much. I started making my own and totally believe in holistic meds! I also buy from a wonderful doctor out of Texas who uses the power of flowers for all kinds of ailments, animal and human. It's called aromahealthtexas. Dr. Judy Griffin is her name and she works in conjuntion with several universities to prove how much flowers can heal. She actually has some breast cancer patients who've had mastectomies and never even had to use pain meds! I also use apple cider vinegar for many problems, pet and human! Thanks so much for the info as I'm new to yorkies and their special needs. I'm always on the lookout for natural remedies.
