| yeast/bacterial infection? Soooo...I haven't changed anything and Jed is broke out with little spots. Same foods, same everything. He has NO fleas! I figure it's either a yeast or bacterial infection. I have some shampoo that I am bathing him in every other day. My question is....How long do I need to keep bathing him this often? I am using Viodine. The shampoo does seem to be helping. He is scratching less and the spots are starting to look dried up. Thanks for the help {Please don't slam me for not taking him to the vet right away. I raised my children the same way...try to treat first (if not life threatening) then go to the doctor. He is otherwise acting fine.} |

| I don't have any advice, but I'm really sorry you are afraid you might be slammed. I am sad you feel that way. There are a lot of really nice people here, and they are happy to help and will not put you down, so I hope you will feel free to post when you need help.

| I'm new to yorkies, but my doxie has such skin problems! I bathe her in a shampoo with lavendar in it. seems to soothe her, but after I rinse, rinse, rinse her, I apply baking soda to her coat and to the main areas on her back legs that like to get yeast going. I grab a handleful and apply to the areas, gently rub around with it, let it stay on as long as possible and then rinse off! This seems to help her so much and it also makes the coat so soft. In addition, I apply once daily listerine mouth wash to the areas. The plain kind. I only do this if there are no open places from where she gnaws at them otherwise it would burn the baby. Listerine can be used for so many things including dandruff in human hair. I do this everyday for about a week and her legs clear right up!!! at least until the next time she gets into whatever it is she gets into to start it up again. It dries it up so to speak. Now I'm not telling you to do this, but just saying I have used this many times and it works for me. Anything that might dry it up somewhat. I also use apple cider vinegar diluted as an ear cleanser too. Just make sure it is the all natural kind. Apply to a soft tissue, wipe and gently clean around the inside of the ear. Never go too far in the ear canal though. This might work for those nasty patches as well. Just google it and there are recipes you can find. ACV is also great for the insides too. You can add 1/4-1/2 teaspoon to the water dish and it helps keep them and us healthier. Also, PLAIN yogurt is wonderful to help clear things from the inside out. I add 1 teaspoon in my babies food everyday. Google ACV and see all the wonderful things it can do! Hope your baby gets better soon. |

| When we got Bailey, the lady said she bathed him every other day. When we told that to the vet, he said bathe once a week. Frequent bathing can cause dry skin, irritation and rashes. So, we bathe once a week and everything seems ok. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I have problems with my four Yorkies itching like crazy around this same time every year but never the same dogs every year. I check them repeatedly for fleas and will only find a few. (pinch and kill them right away) than I bath them a treat them for fleas. This year same thing. I noticed that they had rash like areas on them. So, I took a chance and treated them for "Hot Spots" and it worked !! You might want to treat those spots a hot spots, see if it helps.

| Sorry about that! I meant to say to let the listerine sit for a few mins and rinse and pat dry. I have never had any problems with my Penny after doing this and at one time was the only thing that stopped the yeast in it's tracks, when even vet couldn't stop it. As I said, I'm not advising anyone to do this, but it has always worked for me. Next time I will double read my posts beforehand so I don't leave any important info out. If what your baby has is tiny little spots this sounds like something other than yeast though as yeast will cause the skin to get greasy, start flaking and staying moist and smell to high heaven! Talk with your vet about a little benadryl and proper dosage, if it's ok for this breed to take, etc. They are the ones that can help you the most. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I just had to take Tallulah to the vet Saturday because she was scratching so much. She gets regular flea treatment and neither I nor the vet found any sign of fleas on her. But she did have very dry skin, and the vet suggested a hot oil treatment for her. Problem solved! BTW - the dry skin started just a few days after we turned the heater on, and Tallulah loves to run back and forth in front of the vent when the heater is running, so I was not terribly surprised. I will be bathing her only when she really needs it and putting a nice conditioner on her afterward until the weather turns warm again. |
