| Don't know what else to do! He keeps peeing and pooping inside!! Hi! My new puppy is almost 6 months old. I got him a month ago and the potty training is going nowhere! We tried to crate train him and It was awful because we found out he used to live 24 hrs. caged and for him going where he lived was ok. So when I tried that method it was totally natural for him to go and he would sit on his pee and poop and of course get it all over him and around the crate. After a week without any improvement we decided to get rid of the crate and try again because the cleaning sesisions day and night where too much and it felt like the poopwas spreading everywhere! Then we started trying to take him outside and he seemed to start getting the concept. But now, after a month he doesn't let us know when he needs to go! He is peeing all over (and us stepping on it)! We limit the water intake but that is not helping much either. We don't know what else to do, my husband takes him out at 5 am and by the time I cime down at 7 he has already peed again, tHen I take him out at 8:15 and by 1:15 when I come he's peed agAin!!! I know he is old enough to hold it for 5 hours because he is 6 months, so what can I do? My older yorkie was fully potty trained by now and it is not that I want to compare, but it seems he is old enough to get it and do a better job. Help!!!!! |

| Your going to have to take him out more and watch him like a hawk when your inside so when he starts acting like he is about to go potty you can take him out right away. Are you telling him how good he is when he goes potty outside and giving him a small treat?

| He may be 6 months old, but that doesn't mean he knows what you want him to do. He is old enough to learn it, certainly. You have to be consistent with your routine. Same way, same time, every time. I find, when you are consistent in teaching them a routine, they generally will eventually keep YOU on that routine. I would suggest a play pen area with a potty pad away from his bed, for when you are not home. My dogs prefer to potty outside, but when I am away for extended times, or when it is raining they will use a potty pad, so I believe you can train both ways. I would suggest washable potty pads so you can reuse them. The play pen area will teach him about the potty pad for current, and later use. When you are home, feed him and take him out and don't come back in until you have seen him pee/poop. Knowing his current potty habits is very helpful in predicting his routine. Last, I would also suggest using a bell. When you take him out use his paw to ring the bell then go out and use the potty. This is a great way for him to "Tell" you he has to go. He will get the hang of ringing the bell on his own. Sorry so long. Good luck.

| When we were potty training Rosie we used the potty pads while we were at work. I also bought some spray to put on them that attracted them to potty there. I am sorry but I don't remember what it was called. When I was home I started with taking her out every two hours. Even if she didn't need to go we went outside. I also praised her like crazy when she did her business outside. I even gave her a little treat! After a while, the treats were not even necessary. She just picked up to what she needed to do. As far as being able to hold it for 5 hours, I think each dog is different. I have two girls and mine are very different. Rosie can hold it for a really long time but Mikki can not. She has to be taken out more often. It may just be that your pup needs to be taken out more frequently than the "norm". Good luck to you and remember be consistent!

| With Poppy I took her outside every hour at first, then every two hours, etc. and we did not come inside until she went potty. Lots of praise and treats for the first years as we went thru this process. My vet did warn me to expect occasional accidents until she was at least a year old. Sometimes puppy brain over-rides what they know to do. My friend got a little bell to hang by her back door and every time they went outside she tapped the little bell. Her pup picked it up and would go and hit the bell to go outside to let her know she needed to go potty. Sometimes when pups pee all the time they are just being puppies, other times it could be due to a medical issue such as a urinary infection. Did you recently have your little guy fixed? You may ask your vet if there are any medical concerns. Hang in there and just stay consistent. These little guys are both super smart and stubborn. |
