| how do you wash your washable pee pads? Hi - I'm using washable pee pads for Gracie - love them since they're 'green' and overall less expensive than disposable. BUT - I wash them in hot water and regular detergent but the urine odor doesn't come out completely. I don't use dryer sheets as that negatively affects their ability to absorb, I think. I've got Gracie with me in my office, still, as she doesn't have the run of the house yet. It's a small room - yikes - even though I change the pad out daily (or more often, depending on how often she pees), the smell is still there - even when I put a clean pad down. Thinking about switching to disposable but have to get a snap-down holder since Gracie likes to play with them Any ideas? I've got a front-load washer, btw. Thanks. |

| I use bleach in my washer and detergent. I know some people here use white vineger. That would also work. I'm sure there are others with some good suggestions.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I use warm water detergent and I add 1/4 cup of baking soda to the wash and that takes care of the smell, also if you live in a warm climate put them to dry in a line, I do that all summer long, sadly in the winter I have to use my dryer. my mom uses a cap full of white vinegar in the wash when she washes her puppy pads, and they are smell free also. Best of luck.. Last edited by carmen in nj; 09-15-2011 at 08:37 AM. |

| I make my own detergent from arm and hammer washing suds, borax and castille soap or felz naptha soap. You might also want to add white vinegar, that should take a lot of the odor out and add some borax to your wash also.

| I used to wash Sammy's pee pads in cold water, detergent and a splash of bleach. Then I would hang them to dry. I have a laundry rack in the basement but I also liked to hang them outside in the sun. I didn't have any problems with odors. Good Luck! |

| Detergent and bleach is the way to go. My washer has a "whitest whites" setting on it that I use. I put a whole cup of detergent in and add the bleach to the maximum line. They come out looking like new with no smell at all.

| If the smell is only in that one area, maybe the pee is leaking off the pads onto your floor? Peed-on beds I've washed have always come out smelling fine, so I wonder if it's your carpet smelling. |

| I got my pee pads from a YT Vendor on here, and they came with instructions to use detergent and baking powder. Mine do not keep their odor now that I wash them. My old ones use to but now all the wahable pe pads I have actually smell clean. I had a couple of stubborn ones and I used a little white vinegar on them the first time but now they are good also.

| Thanks! Thanks for all the good ideas - I was thinking bleach or vinegar but didn't want to do something that would make it worse. We've got a plastic tray under them to help the puppy figure out where the edge is (although she still manages to 'hang over' sometimes!. The carpet is fine - and when she misses the edge I'm quick with the Miracle Worker, which works really well. The problem is it's a really small room so I can't put the pee pad very far away from where I'm working. She's pretty close to being able to have more freedom, but not quite. After that, her 'normal' place will be in the kitchen, not my office. I've been thinking about making my own detergent too - glad to hear it works so well. |
