| Potty Training Advice??? Help?? First off, im new here. Glad to say that im the proud owner of my first yorkie!!! (ill get pics soon. she doesnt sit still long enough.) Now I know from what people have told me, 12 weeks is when you are suppose to take them home.....oops. I had no idea until I got her. She is 9 weeks old now. How do you potty train a dog?????? I have a 1yr old male chi who isnt potty trained at all! (hubbys dog :/) I want to train both of them, but I am not sure what is the best way to do it. I have a dog who is already set in his ways, and my new baby. I am a stay-at-home mom, so I should be able to do this. But I need help! I know that there are a lot of products out there. Are any of them worth it? I am totally prepared for the time and consistency this takes, I just dont know how. Any advice from anyone would be so greatly appreciated! THANKS in advance! |

| Welcome! Ok... First off congratulations on your first yorkie! They are fabulous, smart, cute dogs! Potty training isn't the easiest thing to train a yorkie, but don't give up! You need to take your dog out after they eat, play, wake up... Ect. I would say every 15 mins. There bladders are TINY!! As soon as she goes outside get really exited praise her pet her and give her a treat. Crate training is the easiest way and you might want to try that. You put the dog in their at night, and sometimes during the day for short amounts of time. TAke your baby out once it's out of the crate. Maybe putting a blanket over the top to calm her or him down or to get it dark inside. You might want to buy baby gates to lock off areas you don't want her in. We had Bailey in the kitchen for about 1 year so she couldn't potty on my nice rugs! Occasionally they will have accidents, we tried to bring her over and tell her no but they dot coming! We tried sprays and all that. In the end we ended having to stick her nose in the pee so that she would know and then take her out immediately. She will eventually start to wine at the door when she or he needs to go outside.... Hopefully. She will connect, the. Give her a treat when shes done ging potty. I hope this helps!!! |

| Crate train. This explains Crate Expectations by Cheri Lucas | Cesar's Way I leave ours open like it says, he loves to go in by himself & sleep in there on the blankets. Now, one thing i don't do is move the crate at nite, I never moved them with any dog. it stays where it is. When he gets neutered & i am 100% comfortable then he will be given more run in the house. We have only had 1 lifting leg in the house on my dining room chair. Thank goodness only the living room has carpet. good luck! |

| hi and welcome! i too am at home with my ziggy all day so crate training for me didn't work out, i caved!lol plus ziggy would poop in there so it didnt work for us.. so i cant comment on that technique. i have just been watching him like a hawk and he's not alowed in areas of the house where i am not with him. there have been accidents, but at 19 weeks old, we have made great progress. he now walks over to his potty area about 80% of the time for peeing. but only 50% for pooping (its a work in progress) but i believe we're getting there. i praise ALOT when he goes in there right place and give a firm "NO" when he goes other places, pick him up and take him to his potty. and i have asigned a word- "potty" so now he pretty much does it on command.. i think whichever technique you use, the best tool to accompany it is patience! i have read on here that some, if not most, are only really potty trained at around 9-12 months old.. so its a long road. good luck with your new baby.. cant wait to see pics

| Being that your little one is 9 weeks old, I wouldn't take her out to the big bad world of germs just yet. Choose between a crate or an expen for training. Both share the concept of limiting their space. Less space= less places to have mistakes. With a little one that can't hold it very long, you'd need to take her out of the crate often. I don't know if it's every hour or half hour, but the more chances you give her to get it right, the quicker she'll succeed. With the expen, you can Give her designated areas. She might mess up at first, but that's to be expected. The most important part for both methods is consistency and patients. A schedule works great too! Even in an expen, if you have a schedule, you can always walk her over to or place her on the pad. When she goes, use tons and tons of praise! As far as your chi, you can put him on the same schedule. Praise, and treat for a job well done. Don't give either free roam unless they've earned it by proving they know what to do. Your Chi might resist, because he's set in his ways, but it's never too late for him to learn. Good luck and we're here if you need us!

Owned by Bella & Tibbs Donating Member | I have 2 babys Tibbers and Bella and I'm in the process of potty training! What I do is the pee pads for Tibbers he broke his leg and had to be crated for 4 weeks and he would not go in his crate because he knew he had to live in there so I got him out ever hour or two took him to the pad let him do his stuff then give him a treat! Now that he is all healed up he pees and poops on the pad most of the time he maybe had one or two accidents a week ... witch I think is pretty good for a 24 week old! He does sometimes poop beside the pad sometime.... but its in the laundry room on tile so I don't get too upset as long as its really close to the pad he will also go outside if I take him. Now my princess Bella....she is a whole different ball game....When I first got her she was doing so good with the pad however she slowly stopped using it and using my floor :0 So I have been doing strictly outside with her. I take her out every hour or 1/2 hour because she is so tiny. Shes been doing ok sometime she sometime will hold it and still pee in the house. At night they use to go in the crate where she would pee and sometime poop but now I have got a great pen and for some reason she wont go in there she will hold it until I get up and take her out so that a little progress! Best of luck and please remember to stay patient because I have had Tibbs since May and Bella since July and they still have a long way to go!
