| Need Help With Marking Territory! He wont stop! Hello again, been a long time since Ivd visited YT. My Yorkie will be 2 in Aug. My Yorkie was Neutered around 6 months give or take a month or so. That took care of the humping, he only does that now when he play fights and wrestles w the other dog, as a dominance thing Im sure. But my problem is he still marks and never quit, even after being neutered. Talked to the vet about it and he said he shouldnt really do that after he was fixed. Asked me when he started, which was when i brought our 2nd dog home which was before he was fixed. Vet said it was a learned behavior and if he doesnt stop soon he will always do it. He suggested crate trainning again. Problem is, he's potty trained and did pretty easily. He uses the pads and pees and poos, he just still marks. Its always at an object. A toy, by the kitchen garbage can, at the corners of couches or chairs. I almost never catch him in the act to scold him. Just dont know what to do. I dont mind crate trainning for potty trainning, but now he runs free day and night and does well w it. If I start crateing again, he'll drive us crazy whinning and now it seems mean after he's been free for so long. But I dont know what else to do. Thank Goodness I dont have carpet so it wipes up easy since we have the laminate floors. BUT, its beginning to damage it in places. Just not sure what to do. Like I said he's potty trained on the pads and uses them regulaly, he just marks too. I cant part w him, but we cant let him do this for ever.... Help? :O) Last edited by Sgt_Cooper; 07-23-2011 at 11:50 AM. |

Yorkie Yakker | My neutered little guy will mark when we are visiting other houses and also pees when he gets excited. To keep him a polite houseguest and to save my carpet and floors, we have resorted to a belly band. I hate using it but it works... Rocks does not seem to mind having it on but housebreaking has been difficult since he will relieve himself with the belly band on in the house (even after he has been taken outside)....

| I have one here that I boght a while back ago, I just never really used it thinking it wouldnt work. Seems it would be uncomfortable on their little weenies. But maybe we need to get it out and try it again. But, How do you know to take it off for them when they need to potty? |

| Poise pad's are incontinence pad's. You put these on the inside of the Belly band before you wrap it around teh dog. These are what catch the pee and help with keeping teh area dry. But you do have to remember to change them. If you don't use the pad with the belly band it will get soaking wet and will be washed right away. The belly band holds the pad in the place.

| Oh. I knew what the poise pads were, but never thoughtof usin that w a belly band. I thought the belly bands just more or less helped them to want to "hold' it and not have the urge to hike and mark as much. But thanks for the tip. :O) |

| I was going to suggest the pads and belly bands. I have also read on here that you can use something like a 2 litre soda bottle wrapped in a wee wee pad on top of a wee wee pad for potty purposes. Maybe this might help with marking issues. (??)

| I agree with your vet, treat him like a new pup. Set a potty schedule for him. Once he's already gone potty, you can let him roam with the belly band on. When he's roaming, make sure you are watching him to correct him evey time he lifts his leg. When you walk him, praise him every time he pees or marks. That is so he can understand it isn't the act of peeing or marking that you are correcting, but where he is doing it.

| Have you tried putting a bottle on the pee pad? That's what I had to do bc Momo lifts his legs & goes right by the wall. To save the walls, I propped a glass pickle jar wrapped w/pee paper. We also have the pee pad taped to the wall in their designated pee area along w/the washable pads on the floor. He always goes there now, it's his indoor fire hydrant. Good Luck!
