You are quite right, in my opinion, regarding the age thing. I've seen teenagers that are FAR more responsible than most adults, and adults that have the responsibility of an average early teen. I guess we're all learning along the way, and we're all at different spots along the road.

My best way of measuring a person is to do a vet check. In order to adopt from me a person must have a proven history of responsible pet ownership which includes good veterinary care.

Haha! You're right. So you take the people who have a natural affinity towards animals, and you'll find varying levels of commitment.

I was mistaken, as I feel I have become a better pet owner over the years just from experience. I am more commited now, but that only happened because I have 'more' to be committed to, since my pack has increased to 4.

I was very unsettled at that age, in all aspects of my life. And my plans changed many times... and still do, just not as often, and with more restrictions and commitments to be taken into consideration.

Also, at my age, everybody is younger than me! Lol! (I think LJ might be older than me though)

I just remembered, that when I got Cali the breeder made me sign a contract that if at any time Cali was no longer to stay with me that she HAD to go to her. I had forgotten all about that because, of course, it is not going to happen.
But then, this breeder was pretty picky and thorough and really "interviewed" me. As I have learned more, I have come to appreciate that lady more and more!

I completely understand this requirement. Unfortunately, I did not a vet history in order to be considered for a rescue--but I think it was probably better this way because I don't think most people (including myself) understand how much it takes to raise a dog and because most rescues have a "past," I think they require a greater amount of special care and attention that most people cannot even comprehend.

I think that is a very smart idea to gauge responsibility towards an animal. I can't imagine how angry you must get at least on a weekly basis bc of seeing animals lacking care. Just being on this site since Feb. I am amazed at how many ppl post in the sick section and then do not follow the advice to get medical care for their pet. I don't know how you all in rescue and vet med deal w this on such a frequent basis.

If you can reach just one person it makes it worthwhile. It is frustrating though..I will give you that.

I didn't realize that she's now re-homing Tika as well. If I only lived in Canada. Funny thing is, I told my Dad today if we couldn't afford meals for my hubsband and I or Gizmo, I would have no problem skipping a meal if it meant Gizmo wouldn't starve and still be happy. Goodness knows I could live off the fat of the land.

I was going to write a rather long post, about some ideas to keep Tika safe in the wilderness; do you realize even in her home town population 6300, it lies 300 miles north of Edmonton Alberta, what I would call God's country already, and then they are probably going further north for their hunting trips. This locale you'd be hunting big game, moose, elk, bears, bighorn sheep, etc, and likely not hiking in so much as drive/atv in, set up a base camp, and then the members of the hunting trip, hike out daily for their hunt, and often times the "cook" stays at the base camp, for meal prep etc.
I couldn't get the idea of Tika out of my head in this environment. I did come up with some ideas, but now that she is going to be re-homed too, I suppose a moot point. While I was never a hunter, in my younger years, I'd go backpacking, canoeing into the interior of large parks, and yes did take my small dog with me. Her name was Honey and she was a cocker spaniel.

Oh well, certainly hope that Tika and Pooter land up in a good home, prepared to care the rest of their lives for them.

Linda I've thought of another excuse/reason for re-homing dogs; can't afford the vet care, dog is too sick, dog requires surgery, what-ever.

I agree.. I think I am a better pet owner now. My family was not "indoor" pet owners and did not view pets as I do now.

I can say.. I used to hear of people spending 1000 of dollars to save a pet. Before I had my pack I just didn't understand. I had a little shih tuz that got very ill... I spend 1000s of dollars trying to save her. I don't regret a penny and now after "walking in those shoes" I understand.

Well I am only back because I know how much you all care about the well being of the dogs, despite any anger/disappointment/hard feeling towards me.

Pooter went for to a VERY loving family that I know and will get to see him now and again. They love him to death and the girls had been researching online for months all about dog care, they are amazing. They ask me everyday for ideas on what to get Pooter... what kind of food, treats, toys, etc he's completely spoiled and this picture makes me smile because Pooter only makes that face when he's hyper and happy... and he finally gets to sleep in bed! Their mother told me today the girls argue over who gets to feed him, walk him, take him potty etc and they have a Pooter Care chart and they whole family takes part in it. The husband I think loved him the most when haha.

Tikka is still with me right now, but on Monday she goes to a lady I met awhile back who owned yorkies growing up and She had a yorkiepoo die recently at 16yrs old. So Tikka is joining their family, they have a 3year old who came to meet Tikka the otherday and they clicked instantly the little girl asked me for the leash and walked Tikka and when she dropped the leash and ran Tikka ran after her, when the girl fell down Tikka immediately started kissing her and kept the girl from crying and she said "Mommy Puppy likes me!" So I'm so happy to have met them and to have them take Tikka, I will get to see her as well from time to time! Also, this lady's daughter was scared of Small dogs, yet not Tikka! I have no doubt about this being a permanent home since she owned her yorkies from pups til death, so I know Tikka is in good hands.

I didn't make a penny off them, and they both live close by so I can still see how they're doing from time to time. Below is the picture I told you about Pooter. It makes my heart melt every time, if you knew Pooter you'd know how happy he is just by looking at him here! I almost cried when she sent it, because I'm gonna miss his silly smile, but those girls are the best thing that could have happened to him! <3

Anyways, that's all here. Maybe someday when I'm ready and more knowledgable to take on the full commitment I'll be back. I have learned a lot through this, and I've read the comments, the stories, etc and wanted to update you all because i know you care for them as much as I truly do. So goodbye for now, enjoy life YTers! Oh and p.s. the girls had just showered lol their hair isn't greasy. Their mom apologized for that, which was cute.

Yeah, incredibly amazing. If only rescues were just as good as she is in screening families so quickly.
