| Puppy Bite Hello all I have an 11 week old yorkie, she's my first. I have no idea how to train her to stop biting I've never raised a dog before. The big problem is that also living in the house is a one year old doberman. She doesn't realize how small she is compared to him so she bites him and I'm worried that while they play, he'll get tired of it and accidentally hurt her. If anyone has any suggestions, please help I'm desperate. |

| My Teddie was a biter. I also have three other dogs, a 100 pound lab, a 55 pound shepherd mix, and an 11 pound pom. He would bite on them and they would teach him they didn't like it. My lab would bark loudly in his face and scare him, the other dogs nipped back and he learned quick to use bite inhibition. When he bit, or gnawed, on us we would tell him "be niiiiiiice" and hand him a toy he could gnaw on and praise him for gnawing on it. Teddie is great now...that's all we have to tell him is be nice and he adjusts himself quickly and he is 6 months old now. Just wanted to add...Teddie would nip at your nose if you brought him near your face. I taught him to not do that by saying, "you give mmmm kisses." He'll still kinda nip playfully at my husband and that's all he says is "mmm kisses" and Teddie stops and licks. Just thought I'd add that in there... Good luck!

| Welcome! This is a great site (I'm a newbie, too) and you'll find great information. My Gia didn't have littermates so she didn't learn that she couldn't bite hard. When I first got her she would play bite and it was pretty rough. I finally figured out that if I yelped (LOUDLY!) when she bit me it would surprise her and she'd come back towards me and gently lick my hand instead, as if to say "Is this ok?" Now even when we play around she won't bite down. She just grazes my skin with her teeth, but no pressure whatsoever. I will admit that if you're in public it's embarrassing to yelp! LOL! But well worth it in the long run. Good luck and let us know how you do! |

| When Callie was a puppy going through her puppy nipping phase the only thing that worked was a squirt bottle of water and giving her a little squirt and saying no when she would nip.

I do the same thing, only I just say OWE!! In a high pitched voice.. which actually comes pretty naturally when I'm being hurt lol.. but anytime Kizzie gets too eager in her play biting and I cry out she stops right away.. I also redirect like another poster said by giving her a toy to chew instead of my fingers. Your bigger dog will correct her in the same way, by yelping, barking or biting back, if they are friends and are well adjusted he will understand she is small and to be gentle when correcting her. I would supervise her though just to be on the safe side.. | |
