| Yorkies in the swimming pool! Hi Everyone, This is my first Summer with my Yorkie and our above ground pool. Do you recommend them swimming in the pool? What about the chlorine? Should they wear goggles? I think a lifevest is a must! Please give me your input. Yorkie Hugs, Marcie |

| Jackson LOVES the pool... it's probably his favorite thing ever. His first summer, he did not dive in... his second summer, he was a diving maniac. He spends a lot of days in the summer swimming in my dads pool. When he's not over there, you can find him in the baby pool, or the ocean, or a lake, or any body of water he can find. LoL. I don't worry much about the chlorine. It's never bothered him. He gets a bath weekly anyways. Sometimes I rinse him off with the hose with regular water. I do have a lifejacket for him that I like to use but he doesn't necessarily need it. He can go for longer periods of time with it on though so it definitely comes in handy and it makes me feel better to know he has it on -- he tends to over-work himself.

| Hi! We have an in ground pool and the first summer we had it Sophia was running on the wet deck and slid right in! Luckily I was in the pool to help her. Obviously she can swim, but she didn't know how to get back out. So, I practiced with her...putting her in and guiding her to the steps. She is an indoor doggie, but it still worries me! She does not seem to like getting in the pool, maybe Peyton will? So my advice would be to make sure you train her how to get out if you can. Don't know if that is feasible with an above ground? Good luck and have fun!

| You can buy little ramps that I'm sure could work in an above ground

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I would only add that if you let your dog anywhere near the pool, you treat it like you would any toddler -- keep your eye on it every second. It doesn't take long for a tragedy to happen when water is involved. |

I started slow w/ Jackson. He was about 7 months old when the pool opened and I would give him lots of treats when he was around it, then I guided him onto the steps with the treats, so it wasn't be just 'throwing' him in essentially. Then I would carry him in with me, etc. He only jumped in by himself about 3x that summer, but by the NEXT summer (last summer)... boy he was a total water boy. He just loved it. The lifejacket boosted his confidence with jumping too... I purchased it at Petsmart for about $20, I think.

My 5 year old brother died from drowning in 2006 so it's something I'm super cautious about. We actually have a camera set up inside so we can see the pool from our kitchen (we can also see out the windows easily). I really wanted Jackson to be comfortable around the water so he wouldn't freak out if he ever did accidentally fall in (and believe me, it's happened before when we were out there... gets caught up in the moment and slips in). My dads dog Lilly does this... if she falls in, she WIGS out and doesn't know what to do and can't find the stairs... so I was always sure to show Jackson right from the start how to get out, etc.

I am SO sorry for your brother. Oh, that just breaks my heart. We have a cover and are pretty strict about using it....you can never be too careful. Yes, Sophia's first time was an accidental slip in...maybe that is why she doesn't like it. I'm going to get some jackets and go real slow this year...well see how it goes!

| I want a pool. and a life jacket small enough to fit Harley, I took him to the beach last summer and he hated it, couldn't stand the sand. Maybe I'll get him a little kiddy pool.

| LOVE the videos of Jackson swimming!!! I had to show my husband and daughter and we all love how Jackson's tail moves when he swims. So darn cute! We have an in ground pool as well and were thinking Nala might enjoy it because she doesn't seem to mind bath time. I am glad I saw your posts, as I will take it slow with her and get her comfortable a little at a time. I will definitely get a life jacket.

We did let Jack in last year mainly to show him how and where to get out if needed. He wasn't crazy too much of the pool. Just like to stand on deck and bark. LOL Josie I think will be the swimmer. She'll try anything. I think maybe with her in this year Jack will follow. We will go through the "how to get out" drills again in probably a few more weeks. Water is almost ready. I did stand in it this past week end and vacuum. It was hot outside. 92 degrees. | |

| Our pool is an above ground, the dogs are never outside without people. I leave a large flat float in the pool if we are not in it and have trained the dogs to get on it. When I taught my kids to swim the first thing I taught them to do was how to handle falling in. |
