| I am getting so nervous. I don't post that much but I have posted that my husband and I adopted two Yorkie boys (not brothers) last November after our last Yorkie companion of over 14 years passed on Oct. 3. 2010. Now it's time for our smallest guy, Angus, to have his first dental since coming to live with us and I am so nervous. Yes, Eddie had dentals and he always was fine but I always get super nervous. I lost one of my closest companions, a male doberman, during a dental in 1997 because he had von Willebraun's. We didn't know there was even such a disease and he had never had any kind of injury before that caused bleeding. He needed a tooth pulled. I was there in the room with him and of course I gave permission for the vet to pull it, and he bled to death over a period of several days. It's like hemophilia and the bleeding would never stop even though we got human medicine from the local hospital and did everything we could. I'm really nervous about Angus going in. I already love him so much I would be devastated if anything happened to him. Would you all just keep him in your prayers on Monday 28th. I'll update after and let everyone know he came through fine. I've known this vet almost all my life and trust him very much. He operated on Eddie twice and did a dental on him right after we moved back here and he is a good vet. I know how supportive everyone here is and I appreciate any you can give. |

| I am sorry to hear about your tragic loss. I can't imagine what you would feel now having to go get those dentals done. All I can say is try to stay positive. Keep in mind how rare that was and how likely it is that your baby is gonna come through this like a champ!

| I strongly suggest that you have pre-anesthetic blood work done prior to the dental. I am sure all will go well. Will say a prayer for Angus.

| My current Yorkie and my former Yorkie both had successful dentals each time but I, like you, was always very nervous, despite pre-op tests and dogs in good health. I will keep Angus in my prayers and just know he will be fine. My former Yorkie was a runt of her litter and only weighed 3 lbs. as a grown dog but she always came through her anesthesia just fine. Please try not to worry so much though I know it is hard not to.

| Sending my prayers!! If this helps, my rescue recently got her dental and she came out as if nothing happened. I'm sure Eddie will be the same! Best Wishes, Jen

| He has had his blood work done already and he had x-rays done recently too because he ripped open a garbage bag while DH was taking out the garbage and we were afraid he ate part of a shish-ka-bob stick. Did I mention he is mega fast? It was 8PM Sat. night , too so it was off 40 miles to the Emergency Vet. The x-ray showed no stick parts but showed he had a slightly enlarged heart. The vet said it would probably never cause him a problem and he would live to a ripe old age but it worries me. He has this grunt. I was worried at first that it was a collapsed trachea because the first Yorkie I ever had suffered from that. She lived to be almost 18 so it obviously didn't hurt her much, and both vets have now said Angus doesn't have any trachea problems, etc. and they don't even think the heart causes his grunt. I don't know. Maybe he's part piglet. Thank you all for your support and prayers on Monday. I know I'm just a worry wort. It does help to have emotional support. |

| Thank you all for your thoughtfulness. It really means a lot. I called the vet and talked to him for a few minutes today and I feel a bit better, too. |

| Update! Well, it turns out I was right to be concerned. Within 20 minutes after my husband leaving to take Angus for his dental this morning I got this overwhelming feeling he thought we had abandoned him and he was going to a new home again. I don't know why I felt that way because he's gone to the groomer's twice but that was before he and I bonded like we have now. I tried sending him all the love and positive energy I could and just started to wait. At almost 2 PM I was going to call because I couldn't wait any more. At that moment my husband drove up with Angus and said they were unable to do the dental. He had told me Angus was fine when he left him this morning. No barking, no panicking. His pre-op check was fine. DH left him. DH got a call a while later but didn't call me because we couldn't do anything. When they took Angus out of his cage he went totally nuts, they tried to calm and pet him but the more they did the wilder he got until he had a mild heart attack and turned blue. Everything is alright now and he is home and happy. The vet is treating him with some lasix and other things for two weeks and will then check him again. The dental is postponed for now. I asked the vet and he agreed that I can stay with Angus until he is asleep if we are able to do a dental on him so he won't think I have left him. A big Thank You to all of you who sent your prayers today. Angus needed them. |

| Oh, poor Angus. Do they know if it is he age that caused the heart attack and doing tests, etc.?

Doc said he expected him to be noisy in the cage but he was very quiet, then when they took him out he struggled very hard. When they tried to comfort him he just started shaking, turned cyanotic and went limp. Doc said he was so relieved to hear Angus's heartbeat and would not have wanted to call us had it not turned out so well. We all agree it's probably separation anxiety and I will stay with him for all procedures from here on out. I had a doberman I couldn't leave so I always stayed for his dentals and things, although in that case it was more me than him I think. I probably pass my neurosis off to my furbabies. All I know is when my husband opened the front door and put Angus down he came tearing through the house and jumped into my lap and looked me right in the eyes for a few seconds. I made over him a lot, gave him treats and he's sleeping happily right now on my lap. We are both very happy. | |
