| Any good ideas to protect puppy teething from chewing on wooden furniture Teppi's now 5mo. old. Really teething!!! Does anybody have any good ideas to keep her from chewing on wooden furniture? Bitter Apple doesn't really phase her. At first the smell seems to bother her more than the taste. But as soon as that initial smell is gone, within minutes she is back trying to chew on what's been sprayed again, anything that's been sprayed! Is there certain times that their teething is worse than others, like age wise & when does it stop? We're moving into a new apartment the first of April with alot of new wooden furniture that she's never seen. I know she'll be exploring for days. lol I'd just like some advice to keep her from chewing on it. Thanks, Pam

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Just "Nip it in the Bud" keep her in your sights at all times. Try hip leash training, that always worked for me. (put her on her lease/ tie it to your hip or belt loop) It also helps in behavior training very well. And when you can not be with her and have her in your sights at all time either on the leash or running free she should be in her cage with plenty of soft and hard toys to chew on until a time when you feel she can behave herself. It is very very important for you to Correct the Bad behavior but PRAISE the good. Like when she is chewing on one of her toys !!

| I agree with the poster above. At her age, she should be in an expen or crate anytime youy cannot give her 100% attention. she should not be given free access to the house until she is much older. This will help with potty training as well. The good news is, the chewing stage should only last another 3-4 months

| Sorry I'm just now getting back to get your advice. I've been having to use my Mom's computer which is VERY old & VERY SLOW. The day I posted this the computer went on the blink. So it's still been acting up even though someone has been here to fix it. Gladly it's finally working. She really just needs to buy a new computer! Thank you for the advice. Sounds like a real good thing to do. I'll start using her crate more when I can't give her my full attention. I use it now when I have something to do in or out of the house that she wants to always participate in, of course. lol. It's also great to hear that the teething is only going to be another 3-4 months. She's got toys to help with that but that doesn't always keep her content. She's 5 months old now & I love every minute we spend together but it's time to get her under control a little. We're going to puppy classes now. The biggest problem is keeping her attention long enough & keeping her in the same spot long enough. I know alot is just still puppy but they have to learn early when & when not to do things. Thank you again. You've been very helpfull. Hope you're having a nice day & your week will also be a good one. Pam

| It sounds like you've already gotten some good advice. I used Bitter Apple with my girls. Because Ashley was so stubborn, it took a few times for it to stop her. My father was working with a trainer who told him that Bitter Yuck works better than Bitter Apple. I haven't used it, but with how loving and careful my father's wife is with their dogs, I'm sure she wouldn't use it if it could harm them in any way.

| Thanks! I'll see if I can find the Bitter Yuck & try it. Do you know where to get it. Does PetSmart carry it? Teppi is going to puppy classes there is why I'm asking or maybe I have to get it somewhere else.

| I've never used it myself, but the trainer was using it on my father's two fox terriers and long haired dachsund to try to prevent them from jumping. If definitely worked. I'm in New York and my father is in California, so I didn't see it myself. She was spraying it in their mouth when they jumped, which I didn't like the sound of, but it is safe and it stopped their jumping. I just read some reviews and it doesn't deter some dogs. They will give you your money back if it doesn't work, so I guess you don't have anything to lose. It's water based instead of alcohol based, which I like. NaturVet Bitter Yuck! | I used this tip on an electrical cord we couldn't cover or hide and not on wooden furniture though, so that might make a difference. I don't know if it will hurt your furniture. I learned this tip from another YTer. Try rubbing clear deodorant on the areas that are most "attractive". You have to keep applying it every day because it will go away, but Gizmo just tried it a couple of times and that's all it took. He went back about a week later and I watched him try again, and his reaction was priceless! lol I used this tip on an electrical cord we couldn't cover or hide and not on wooden furniture though, so that might make a difference. I don't know if it will hurt your furniture. Also, we discovered that a frozen washcloth really helped with the teething. That and simple ice cubes. I put them in his water bowl and he would fish them out and play hockey with them on the kitchen floor. It was fun to watch!

| Thanks again everybody! All this sounds great. I'll see if they have the Bitter Yuck @ PetSmart Thurs. when we go to puppy class. I'll also get some clear deodarant especially for Teppi. I've heard of the ammonia & water mixed. I had thought about that maybe when we go for walks. There are alot of pinecones where we're moving & Teppi wants to play with all of them. Maybe a little stinky spray will stop that. So far she's not chewing on furniture too bad here but I'll be ready if she does. I'll just be so glad when this teething thing is over! She also likes to teeth on me @ times! lol It hurts!! I feel sorry for whatever she gets her little teeth into. lol Thanks so much friends. I'll let you know how it goes. Pam

| Thank God! She's 5mo old. I'm over half way through the teething stage!! I am putting her up more now so she's not running loose all the time. With alot of love & patience we'll get there. No matter what she chews on we'll deal with it by using all this great advice. Pam

| Make sure she has something good to chew on ~ bully sticks, etc. Whatever she loves.
