| Chocolate—Confectionary chocolate and dogs do not mix. While chocolate is not poisonous, theobromine which is found in chocolate is. Theobromine triggers epileptic seizures in susceptible animals, and can cause cardiac irregularity leading to myocardial infarct and death. Additionally, chocolate irritates the gastrointestinal tract, even to the extent that it causes such internal bleeding that it can kill within a couple of days. Induce vomiting; give activated charcoal slurry. http://www.workingdogs.com/doc0175.htm

| This may be too late to help you received very good advice...if it ever happens again these things below work. the ipecac should work but if you dont have that use 3% peroxide 1 tsp every 15 minutes ONLY 3 times it will induce vomiting. if you dont happen to have peroxide you can use salt at the back of the throat. hope your baby is ok

| For animal emergencies, call The Animal Poison Control Center, a service of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, at 1-888-426-4435. Headquartered in Urbana, Illinois, the Center opened its phone lines in 1978. Today, the phones are staffed 24 hours a day, every day, by veterinary toxicologists. Because the center receives no government or private funding, there's a $45 charge per case, though, at no extra charge, the Center will do as many follow-up calls as necessary in critical cases, and at the owner's request will contact their veterinarian directly. The Center also provides, by fax, specific treatment protocols and current literature citations when needed. This time of year is its peak season, and Center Medical Director Dr. Knight says they're averaging about 275 calls each day, including "quite a few from New Hampshire. The Center also has a well-designed, easy-to-navigate website (http://www.napcc.aspca.org/), which includes tips on preparing an emergency first aid kit for animals, and a page of tips for veterinarians. http://www.boxer-rescue-la.com/Libra...m-poisons2.htm

| A remedy that works I know this is too late to help you, but I'd like to post about a similar experience with my 3-1/2 lb yorkie, Kenzie. She ate some truffles that were in my daughter's car. When my daughter realized what happened, she immediately pulled over and pulled as much of the chocolate out of her most as she could, then immediately drove home. We called the vet, who instructed us what to do. He said to give her 1/2 teaspoon of peroxide every 15 minutes until she threw up. It took two doses, but she soon began vomiting. I'm not even sure I'd call it vomiting. It was more like foaming at the mouth, kind of like something you'd see on the Excorcist. LOL First, it was white, then soon turned to a light mocha brown, then darker. Soon, she had gotten rid of all the chocolate, and had no additional problems. The vet also told us that a dog would have to eat a LOT of milk chocolate for it to cause harm. (Good news.) The dark chocolate (particularly the kind Kenzie ate) was potentially much more harmful. So, if any of your pups happen to eat any chocolate, this works great, and I recommend it. Kenzie ate chocolate one other time, this time only a very small amount of milk chocolate, and I immediately administered the peroxide. Same results. Good luck with your baby. Please keep us updated. Oh yeah, and guess what we made Kenzies' AKC name? "No More Truffles for Kenzie!" |

| What a nice ending for Kenzie. I'm betting Gizmo will also come out of this as good. I found this. How to induce vomiting Giving your dog a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water can induce vomiting. Mix the regular Chemist strength of hydrogen peroxide (3%) with an equal part of water, but do not attempt to pour it down your dog's throat, as that could cause inhalation pneumonia. Instead, simply pull the dog's lips away from the side of his mouth, making a pocket for depositing the liquid. Use at least a tablespoon of the mixture for every ten pounds of your dog's weight. Once the mixture has been given, he will begin to vomit in about two minutes. When his stomach has settled, give him a teaspoon of Epsom salts in a little water, as this will empty the intestines quickly. The hydrogen peroxide, on ingestion, becomes oxygen and water and is harmless to your dog; it is one of the best antidotes for phosphorus, which is often used in rat poisons. After you have administered this treatment to your pet, rush him to your veterinarian for further care. (If you have any doubts it is best to seek veterinary advice first.) http://www.k9dogs.co.uk/Medical.htm

| sick dog I wouldn't give him pedialyte, unless you know how much to dilute it. I would offer him plenty of water because there is a chance he will get dehydrated. Did you see any of the foil and choc come back up? I have heard the same thing, that it would take lots of chocolate to do damage. I don't think you need to go to the emergency room as of yet. I would stay up with him and keep a very close watch on him. If he has seizers, is lethargic, or anything else that was previously posted, then I would bring him to the emergency room immediately. Is it possible to call a friend or family member to loan you the money in case it comes to that? Please keep us posted. |

| It is 2:30 a.m. here and I just had to come back and see how Gizmo is doing!! I am glad he finally threw up...getting most of that chocolate out of his system. I am not sure how long ago you posted about the pedialyte but on of the vet sites I looked at earlier said they would hook them up to an iv for hydration. How is Gizmo? He is in my thoughts!!!

No Longer a Member | Hi All~ Giz and I finally tried to lay down around 3:00 this morning. He woke up twice more to thro up..yes, in my bed. Very little of the foil came up but each time it became lighter and lighter brown. I know it sounds gross but it was thick and slimy. He's moving kinda slow this morning but you can tell he's feeling better than he was last night. He spent the night nuzzled up on my shoulder under the covers, did not dare try to snuggle..didn't want to squeeze his little belly. He only had diarreah twice last night. Will watch him today. Just before we went to bed I gave him 1/2 tsp. Pepto and he was able to quiet down and rest a little. I don't EVER want him to go thru something like this again. Have heard about doggie first aid kits, anyone know what I should put in it? Once again Giz and I thank you all for your prayers. I prayed us both to sleep last night..very peaceful after a long ordeal. Never had friends "come out of the woodwork' so trying to help me before. You will never know how compforting it was..and appreciated. Once again, going to keep him quiet today and watch him, will post more later. ~Denise |

| Thank goodness. I hope all will be well with him now. Tell Mr. Gizmo that we have all been praying for him and send him lots of hugs and kisses. Re: the doggie first-aid kit Unless someone else has the info on hand, I will look it up and post it later this afternoon if I can find it. Hugs to you Mr. Gizmo and mom, too. I know she's been awfully worried.

| It sounds like Gizmo is recovering. I'm SO glad! I've had cyberfriends before, but never cyber dog friends. But some of the owners post fairly often and/or have distinctive writing styles and/or the dogs have interesting names and you notice the posts and start to feel like you know the dogs. I suspect little Gizmo will have a rough day but be OK. Our 40 pounder once ate a 5 lb box of Valentine candy. He threw up a lot and was poorly for a few days, but he pulled through. By day 3 or 4 he was perfectly fine. BTW, I went to the link for the dog emergency kit, but the site said that page wasn't working. Does anyone know of any other links? |
