| Anesthesia...advice please! Hope is a 3-4 lbs yorkie and she needs her anesthetic dental and get spayed. Unfortunately, I will not be able to have her get both done at the same time. Therefore, I am wondering how long I should wait after her dental to get her spayed as she will have to be put down both times. I asked the spay/neuter clinic and they said that it doesn't matter....right now she's scheduled about 2 weeks after her dental to get spayed. Please let me know so I can reschedule a later time if necessary. Sorry I'm posting so many different threads, I just have so many different questions...

| I would wait at least a month inbetween. Why cant you have it done at the same time. That is taking alot of risk having it done twice

| I agree. It's also going to be a lot more expensive to do the procedures separately. |

| I have never heard of a problem with going under twice so close together (necessary when the surgical site abscesses and has to be repaired or whatever). It is a call that I would be letting the attending vet (not the s/n clinic) make. It is better for the dog if they don't have to go through induction twice. Baby teeth don't take long to pull at all (maybe a minute or two each for most). This is really something I would have a hard time agreeing to another anesthetic episode for.

| Ask your vet, it should be based on her specific needs not the experience of others for something like this: many can go back to back no problem vet may tell you 30 days apart...nope 24 hrs lets do it all back to back... Most people on here with epileptic dog have been able to get their dog fixed and go under with no problem...my vet feels Elvis only has a 50/50 chance of non-complications until his seizure issues stabilize with medications and we monitor the new pattern or lack of them....so in his case what everyone says means nothing it's case specific based on the what the vet says. Elvis is still awaiting alteration...okay he's not I am... |

| On the subject of anesthesia safety..... Make sure you get pre op bloodwork done. If the spay/neuter clinic doesn't do it, take Hope to your regular vet and get it done a week or two before. Bloodwork will tell your vet how Hope's organs are working and will alert him to anything that might cause a problem during anesthesia. Yorkies especially need pre op bloodwork since the breed is so prone to liver disease as anesthesia is processed through the liver. Please read this stickie on Anesthesia protocol from our YT library and discuss what type of anesthesia will be used with the clinic before you schedule the appointment. Make sure the clinic is familiar with the special needs of toy breeds in regards to anesthesia. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-protocol.html |

| It can be dangerous having a dogs (or humans) under anesthesia a long time, I think I would split it up too. (non practicing nurse) |

| One more thing, anesthesia is a lot of stress but doing two procedures at once is also! Take the Vets advice, he is the trained one. |

| Hope had her blood work on Friday and I'm still waiting to hear the results. I'm still hoping to not have to put her under twice, but if I have to, it will be a month apart. I'm still looking at vets... She's an adult dog and her teeth are rotting in her mouth so it's not just baby teeth.

That could take an hour or two. Wouldn't be wrong to do them separately..

| Most vets spay and as they are slowly coming out, they do the teeth...dogs are still out of it, but no more anesthesia... |
