| Help with Housebreaking, please!! Hi All! I wrote a week ago looking for some suggestions for switching my 5 month old Sophie from pee-pads to outside and would LOVE some advice. She is about 98% trained on the pads, but I think it's time she starts going out. We've had a little success, she has gone pee on her pad outside a time or two and has even gone in the grass (and snow!) a couple of times. When she goes it's usually after I get home for the day (she's only alone for 5 hours). We leave her in an x-pen with her bed, toys, and a pee pad, but she never uses the pad. If I pick her up straight from her pen and put her harness and sweater on and take her outside she will go, sometimes. Otherwise, she will hold it the whole time we're out, sometimes up to a half-hour and then go to the pad as soon as we get in. I've slowly been moving her pad toward the door and keep a pad outside too. She seems to like being outside, although I'm now trying to work on her barking at everyone. Sometimes she's sniffing around like she's going to go, but then the wind blows or a car drives by and forget it! I praise her excessively as soon as she does go outside and try to give her treats, but she's more interested in sniffing her pee. Also, we never properly crate trained her, she's always just had the x-pen so I feel like she doesn't know how to hold her pee for long because she always has a pad available. Should I remove the pad or try to crate train her in her x-pen? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!! |

| I am no expert but I think crate training would be difficult after being in an expenses for so long. I have read on her that you should move the pad towards the door very slowly to give the idea of going outside. My Maggie used to pee outside and come back in to poo. She still occasionally will do that. Hot rod will pee on the pads all day but prefers to poo outside and pretty much holds it to do so. It's strange.cause if he really has to go, he has a spot on the front door carpet that he will go on but he will wait to go outside more so. I would say that taking her out fairly often and lots of praise would be the thing to do. Good luck.

| I personally like the option of outside AND inside. This way they are used to both so if it's bad weather they can go inside or if you are traveling they can go inside. Teddi has pads inside but I take her out in the morning and at nite (depending on the weather) but I wouldn't want her to only do one or the other. I like having the option of both.

| Sophie Kate is both pee pad and outside trained using the pee pad only in the case of emergency. The first thing I did was train her outside and the command "go potty", everytime she went I would say "go potty" and when she did it was a major celebration complete with training treats, kisses and cheers. Once we got that mastered we moved on to the pad, I would put her on the pad and say "go potty" - did it click right away? No!!! I just kept up and was consistant. I tried every method of potty training and the best was getting her on a schedule and sticking to the schedule. Sophie Kate is crate trained, I found that worked best, everytime she comes out of the crate the first thing we did was go outside and go potty (we still do that). Good luck.

| the way we trained mickey on paper first then outside just like you. so when we'd house train him we'd associate his activity with a verbal cue so every time we'd take him to the bathroom we'd say "pee pee" then when he was successful in this we'd take him to the park. after walking for about 5 mins we would state the verbal command he learned. so we'd say "pee pee" and let him sniff out the area. Have you thought about using those puppy pee trianing sprays? I plan on using that when i train my new puppy outside because sadly, i do not have any grass near my area (yes, asia can be pretty sad) |
