Thor's Human Donating Member | Argh! Just when he was getting better.... In the past month or so, I've noticed that Thor no longer wants to play-guard his toys with me. We used to have so much fun with this. He would either hold the toy in his mouth, and I would try to get it away from him (I have to use my pinky because otherwise it would be no fight at all), or he would lie on top of his toy and play-bite my hands when I grabbed for it. I think what happened is that in one of my play grabs, I accidentally hit his face and scared him. Now if I "play bow" to him, he starts licking his lips, and if he has a toy in his mouth, he drops it. I think he believes now that I am not kidding around when I act like I want his toy. Anyway in the past few days, he FINALLY started to act like his old self again, even growling at me a little bit when he had a toy -- his growl is HILARIOUS. And just now, when I was reaching for a toy in his mouth, I sort of smacked him again. It was very soft, but I think it was enough to kill his confidence, because he started dropping his toys immediately after that. I guess I need to be way more careful about grabbing for his toys. I just hope he'll work up his courage one more time.

| Aww Thor is one sensitive little guy... I have a lot of fun playing tug-o-war with Couver, but he is a tough cookie. I hope you can build him back up so he will want to play growl and act tough with you...

| Don't feel bad, it happens. Accidents happen and little fearful guys just don't bounce back as quick. Kaji and I were playing fetch and I accidentally hit him and poked his eye. I reached for the ball he had in his mouth today and he peed a little. I know he peed without looking at the floor because when he pees or has an accident, his tail goes straight up and gets stiff. Well, he did that and when I checked the carpet a little later I saw where he squirted a little. I try not to check in the moment, because when I use to, he learned what I was checking for and it would just make him more nervous. So what I do now is keep going with the game. Take the ball, throw it, and while he's fetching check the floor.

Thor's Human Donating Member | I'm sorry, your story about Kaji made me laugh. I'm sure it's not fun to deal with, though. I guess it could be worse, Thor doesn't urinate submissively. I kind of don't understand it, because I've had him for two years now, and we never had a problem like this before. It's strange how their little quirks keep evolving and surprising you.

| I can rough house Ben (my male yorkie) all day long, but Candy (my Jack Russell) is the one that will shy away if you barely bump her. She has been skitterish since day one. (I attribute that to getting her too young. ) So, I know what you are talking about. I don't know what to do to make them understand you would not hurt them for the world and only want to play fight over the toy. I guess, just build back up to it again. Poor little guy -- needs his confidence boosted.

I read this as "you barely hump her". I was thinking, yikes, that is real rough housing!

| I know it is late QS, but no way am I going to be humping on my poor pups -- gentle or rough! LOL! I think I will retire for the night on that one. This has gotten x-rated.

| Try a little ball with a long rope on it to start you make consider one of those cat toys that has a pole and then astring... that's how I started with Scoober a mini kong works great too to add a rope runing through it and also add a treat inside to invoke interest. Eventually I got to the point just my finger was in the kong. Our favorite toy here is the Pet Stages rag rope ball since it has so many ropes all over, we throw it then tug over it (but my dogs still know drop it). Gradually work back up and I'm sure your baby knows it was an accident especially if you calmly comforted and made attempts to continue play-my Elvis (Yorkie) acts the same as your Thor and I've never been able to get him to play tug, we play chase your squeeker instead but to be honest he doesn't do many "dog" things he's the dictionary definition of a lap dog |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Thanks, you guys. I almost feel like I am admitting I'm an abuser, claiming that I keep "accidentally" hitting Thor in the face. But I swear, it really is an accident! Also, on the hump thing, sorry, didn't mean to disturb anyone! I was really just picturing someone say, "Sheesh, my dog is sooooooooooo sensitive about every little thing I do when we play. Lighten up, dog!"

Thor's Human Donating Member | Yay! He's playing again. We played about 30 minutes of Angry Sock (I put my hands in socks and he bites them), and then he felt comfortable enough to taunt me with his little yellow monkey. I'm going to be reeeeeeeaaally careful about grabbing for his toys from now on. I'll just stick with growling and menacing for now.

| Huh...Scoobers used to have issues with socks, he ate them, he had his very own Angry Sock game that I wasn't aware of...only pure white ones though-he's very picky...finally got him over the socks. Huh we actually call him Boobers all the time now...guess what other clothing garment he started eating after socks...only the little string between cups though then he was done...and so was that particular garment... Quicksilver glad to hear you two are back at it though...just don't smack him around anymore (j/k) Accidents happen! Once Thor is over it completely, do you give him little pushes backwards to get him to come back at you? It's like the complete opposite of how you would train a normal dog, and builds courage and confidence in a timid dog. P.S. I buy socks at Costco...came in handy with Scoobers lil phase... |
