| How much Sleep is TOO MUCH? So, how much sleep should a dog get a day. Tommy sleeps like all day everyday. The only time he wakes up is when I wake him up to go potty. He won't even go eat downstairs to eat unless I take him down there. When I wake him up, he stretches, does his little shake and looks at me like 'why the hell did you wake me up and, where am I' and he's grummbles..lol. It's funny. I just give him lots of kisses. He goes to potty quick ( 3min or less) and he's right back upstairs to sleep. He doesn't like toys. I dont know what to do to keep him from being bored. |

| How old is teddy? My girls are both 3 and while they sleep quite a bit they do not sleep all day. We also try to go ona 45 minute walk everyday...of course with it turning quite cold the past week we have had shorter 15 minute walks..lol. as for keeping him from being bored...we'll it took me a year to find a toy sophie would play with. : ) good luck in your search to get teddy to be more active : ) |

| He probably wore himself out barking at your brother! If it continues too long, maybe have your vet check him out.

| Some dogs are only as lazy as you let them be... my dads Doxy mix, Buddy, would probably be content to sleep most of the day, but we give him walks every day, outdoor playtime in the yard, and he's very happy to do those things too. You just have to be the one to initiate it. Jackson is super active but he likes his sleep too. He usually sleeps from 10pm-morning (9am-ish) and then he goes back to sleep until noon or 1 o'clock. But then he's ready to go. I always be sure that if he doesn't get his daily walk, he gets activity or he would drive me nuts. We have to dog park once or twice a week, walks atleast 5 days a week, tricks/obedience/training at least once per day, and he needs a chance to just RUN a few times a week, etc. But like I said he will practically sleep from 10pm-noon the next day (with a morning potty break of course).

A couple weeks ago was pretty nice outside. I opened the patio and let him outside. It's a nice, small space to play with grass. He stood there looking at me like, "what do you want me to do" I've taken him to the dog park, again he gave me the same "look" Mind you it was just us at the park..so maybe that has something to do with it. Right now, oddly the only time he seems to have any fun is now that the snow is down. He runs around in it. That's about as much running as I see from Tommy. How should I go about corrently learning tricks and things like that? I guess I'll go check the Obedience Thread. Oh, and the Vet told me that after Tommy has some time getting more comfortable with me, then we should look into obedience classes that are available. How soon should I wait to say we're ready? I've included more pics of what Tommy does best Today @ 11:20am (after potty break and bath)

| Tommy is a cutie! Have you tried walking him with other dogs? Maybe following the lead of another dog would spark his enthusiasm. Or try taking him walking where there are lots of sights and sounds like a city street. |

| he Since I am new here, I am in awe that you all are saying stuff about "my" dog. lol Captain Jack will be as active as I am active, I go, he goes, I walk, he walks, He loves going new places and loves people. BUT,he has no desire to make friends with other dogs. He doesnt bark, just has no desire. The problem is I am not very active, so therefore, he isnt. I guess I need to motivate myself for his sake. Also, at 4.5 years he still only wants to play with one toy. I thought that was unusual, maybe not. |

| They have their favorite kinds of toys. Some like squeaky toys more than any others. Some like only the soft, cloth toys, while others like the vinyl toys. They all have their preferences. Each one is individual in their likes.

Thor's Human Donating Member | I think Thor is probably awake only a few hours per day. He'll stay awake if we're outdoors all day... I think he's probably just bored. I don't think there's much I can do about that though, because he doesn't like to move unless I'm moving too. If I take him to the park and sit on a bench, he'll sit there too. If I walk around or play fetch with him, it's a different story. He also doesn't "self entertain". He doesn't like chews unless he can demolish them in under twenty minutes. He only plays with toys if I'm playing too, etc. I do worry about him being bored most of the day, and I think the solution is to get him a buddy. However, he's not very social with other dogs, so I'm waiting for the perfect dog to come along - very small, very friendly, but mellow too. In the meantime, Thor goes to doggy daycare 2x / week to practice his social skills. He actually also needs a ton of exercise -- it's a weird combination. I walk him, take him to the park, train him every day, etc. However, unless I'm really engaged with him, he's probably dozing.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Tommy is adorable! I think dogs have to be taught how to have fun. We plucked them out of their natural environment eons ago, so they don't instinctively know what to do with their energy -- or lack of it. Some dogs get in trouble because they have too much energy and don't know what to do with it other than destroy things. Other dogs can get lazy because they don't have to work for their meals, so they really don't HAVE to do anything to survive. Shoot, I'd be triple my weight if that were the case with humans. I'd suggest trying to teach him how to play. Try different toys, and don't expect him to play with it on his own. Play tug of war, try fetch. Use treats to reward the kind of responses you'd like to see from him. Buy an interactive toy where the dog has to work to get a treat out of a toy. Make yourself part of the game. And start a daily walk. Once you develop a toy drive, take a toy on the walk to make it more interesting. Bring treats on the walk. Let him sniff stuff. If you make it fun, he'll start looking forward to it. I find doing activities at the same time helps. Walk first thing in the morning. Then breakfast. A trip outside for potty. A long day while I'm at work. Then either games or tricks in the evening or another fun walk. As for obedience training, find someone who teaches positive training methods and start right away. If the instructor knows how to keep the training positive, it should improve your bond with your dog. Talk to the instructor before the class begins and let him or her know what you'd like to accomplish in the class. Maybe they'll direct you to another type of class that's designed for fun. For tricks, buy a book or look for instructional videos on youtube. Here's one book I liked. Some of the tricks are geared for bigger dogs, but there are many a little dog can learn. 101 Dog Tricks - Training Books - Training & Behavior - PetSmart Good luck. Have I said Tommy is adorable yet?

I went online earlier today looking up obedience training for yorkies. I started our first lesson today: Learning his name. I used tiny strips of my vegan jerkey..he loves it..more than I do lol. He made good eye contact, but I could tell he was still kind of bored. I'm going to do more of the 'learn your name' exercises and teach him 'sit' tomorrow. I'm going to make tomorrow an ACTIVE day for the both of us. eta: Again, I'm laying here typing on my laptop, and he's laying across my back legs snoring away

| I think you might want to start with short walks. Maybe 15 mins the first week then move it up according to his adjustments. If his used to just taking naps it might be too much to take at once.

He cracks me up. I live in a townhouse so all the houses look alike. After he goes potty. I praise him, and I say, "lets go home" then we both run home together He knows how to get back to my house. He usually slows down when he thinks he's close to my place. He lets me get to the front door, open it..and I tell him "come on let's go home" and off he'll run in the house..upstairs to lay down
