| Both cute but I think they could be mixes, but very strong on the Yorkie. I bet they are more likely to be all yorkie but maybe not well-bred. The "look" is different for a well bred Yorkie. Sometimes I have a problem putting it into words. Now to be fair -- 5 month old Yorkies are in their most awkward stage and can have different looks that make their way around to looking more like the standard after they pass the 1 year mark. But I do not rally think those ages are accurate. I think the female is pretty much an adult and will always look like that. the male may change significantly. Normally your really high quality yorkie is not going to find itself in a shelter, either. But that does not mean they can't be extraordinary pets! No way would I believe the first pic is only 5 months old. The blue/grey would not be on the back at all at that age, maybe a little on the top of the head only. The second pic may be 5 months (see the very top of his head does have some silver hairs sitcking up as you would expect from that age). He is VERY big for a 5 month old though. Thinking he is going to be well over 10 pounds. But I think he might have a very cute adult look. I think both are close enough to looking all yorkie to fit the bill if you are looking to rescue a yorkie. Temperment would be my number one trait to decide. How they act with you is hard to tell at the shelter too. If you can ask to take them outside away from the other dogs and as far from the noise and smells that they relate to the shelter Then spend as long as you can letting them warm up to you and see how they act. The dog's personality means the world to me. Good luck! With some good old TLC, I bet either will make a wonderful addtion to your family and what a great thing you!

| Well, I'm home now. I didn't get either of them. They were both definately puppies. Neither had lost their k9 (?) teeth yet and both had the adult teeth just barely poking through the gums. The boy was HUGE and rather playful. The little girl (the one I was hoping for) was so shy and timid, very submissive. Not the temperment I was hoping for. Her coat was very dry and brittle. She just was not a good fit for me. I have a 7 month old yorkie boy. He loves everyone, wants to sniff and play with every person and every other dog he comes across. He never cowers. I want another one with more of the same temperment. I inquired about their health and they handed me the personality profile the previous owners filled out. The shelter staff said the people that brought them in got them from a breeder. The profile that the owners filled out checked off that they got both of them from a pet shop. I mentioned that to the shelter worker and she said, very snotty I might add, "Pet shop/breeder, same thing" I said they are not the same thing. I didn't want to get into it with them. The right pooch will come along. |

| definitely. Their personalities are different in a shelter environment vs a home. It's hectic and stressful in a shelter. Plus, the coarse dry coat could be remedied with a bit of TLC and some good food.

You also cannot expect a shelter worker to know the true personality of a puppy that is in a shelter. It takes about 2 weeks for the true personality of a shelter pup to come out. Shelter works can be very stress by the daily neglect and suffering they are witness to so please try to cut them a break. They are underpaid or volunteers and not treated with much respect for what they do. ![]() My Bogey is a shelter pup and if I would have assessed him by his behavior at the shelter I would not have a wonderful, calm, sweet, cuddly, beautiful little guy. His coat was a mess (dull, brittle, matted), he was so hyper that I was barely able to pick him up, did not walk on a leash, he didn't know grass, stairs, toys, treats, tricks, treats, or proper social behavior. Right now he is curled on my lap sleeping and is the biggest love bug that I could possibly want. He loves the car and it always the first at the door to go bye-bye. I'm not even sure how to address your comment about pet shop/breeder comment. IMO anyone who allows 2 dogs to have puppies is a breeder but that does not make them a good breeder. Purchasing from someone who calls themselves a breeder does not mean much in my book. It unfortunate that you were ill-prepared for your experience in looking for a new addition to your family when you went to the shelter to look at the 2 little puppies. You might have just passed up the very best addition to your family and helped to save a live. ![]() Good luck in your continued search for a new puppy.

| I have to share a few photos of Barley. The first two are how he looked in the shelter. The last two have been taken over the last two years that we have been blessed to have our little man in our lives. When we got him he was very interested in just watching everything that was going on outside around him and could care less about interacting with us. But the second we got in the house he seemed to click and wanted to love and play with us. Living in a shelter is very hard and scary for them. Put yourself in the dog's shoes....they were taken away from their families and put in these cages in a room with a lot of other dogs in cages that are all crying out for love. It's heart breaking and that is probably what you were seeing in her. I'm sorry this one didn't work out, but I'm sure you will find your diamond in the ruff just like we did with Barley. Thank you for considering a rescue!

| [QUOTE=megansmomma;3326990]When you walk into a shelter looking for a new pet, you cannot expect their behavior to be anything like it would be in your home. Shelters are very stressful to animals and they will begin to take on and show signs of xenophobic behavior from the others animals around them. ![]() The little girl was probably very scared being in the shelter. When dogs are scared, they are not going to act like how they would in a safe, loving environment. I can't believe that 2 yorkie puppies are still at the shelter. I hope that a yorkie rescue will take them so they don't end up in the wrong hands.

I was by no means ill prepared. I just did not want this particular dog. It would be irresponsible on my part to get a dog I do not want simply because I feel sorry for it or someone tries to guilt me into taking it. As far as "saving a life" goes. If it is somehow your business, my little guy I have now is from a rescue and my cat was adopted from this very shelter. I do not have to justify where I will get my next pooch from. | |

I was in NO WAY trying to guilt you into anything but trying to educate your or other readers regarding shelter behavior. As a matter of fact it's a good thing that you walked away if you felt they did not meet your expectations. I'm sure they will find a wonderful home that will love and take care of them. I have personal experience with adoption and rescues and just wanted to share with everyone~just as you did. Here is a wonderful thread of many members that shared their stories about their additions to their family that turned into wonderful little yorkies. They were in all types of situations and conditions. With time, compassion and love they all blossomed into beautiful little yorkies. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ed-yorkie.html
