Question Behavior Problem: Does Your Dog Have Any

Tonight, a Golden Retriever wanted to meet Maxwell at his agility class. He wasn't so welcoming to the idea after he got a smell of him. He got down in the "down dog" position and showed his teeth and growled. The lady did move her dog away since he looked like he was going to attack. He likes large dogs like the Lab/Husky in the neighborhood and is comfortable around him, so why did he act this way, I have no idea. The Golden Retriever was very friendly and a bit shy but my little guy is getting this way a lot with certain dogs. I haven't been walking him in the neighborhood lately for this reason and other reasons. Has this ever happened with you and your dogs~? Is there a reason for it, do you know~? Our agility teacher told me that he may be comfortable with the Lab/Husky in the neighborhood and not this new dog he met tonight. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Since I have been taking Tink to the dog park I have noticed she is definitely more comfortable with certain dogs over others. I am not sure just exactly how or why she chooses, but she does. I think sometimes our dogs read an energy that they just don't like. Tink has met and liked other yorkies, poodles, and beagles, but hasn't met a pug yet that she likes???

I can honestly not think of a major behavior problem with Jackson. He doesn't leash lunge, he doesn't bark at other dogs, he walks great on a lead, etc. I guess his main issue is being a copycat. Like, if we're in the car with other dogs that are barking, he will bark along with them even if he has NO clue what he's barking at. He does this at my dads house too with their 2 barking dogs. Luckily, I can get him to stop pretty quickly. Oh and he barks at the door when someone walks in or knocks.

In the past, I've tried to introduce him to other dogs in hopes of bringing him a playmate as well as a new addition to the family. That didn't work out, cause he would turn his back on me and ignore me in a snobby way, which he did tonight. Maybe he thought that, who knows. We're only doing agility and socialization for both of us.

Yes. Trixie wants to eat the little boy that lives down the street. I'm quite convinced of it. She loves everyone....except this one little boy and I'm sure that if given the chance, she'd take a chunk out of him. I can't say I blame her-he is a very annoying, badly behaved little kid. I'm not to fond of him myself.

Kaji is anti social towards humans. You have to be pretty darn special for him to be ok with you. The people that take part in his human word I can count on both hands. That's it. He's getting better v-e-r-y--s-l-o-w-l-y. I've been working with him for over a year.

My Maxwell is the same way with a little boy that comes next door to play with the kids. He irritates Maxwell and he annoys him as well. Once he got out and nipped his ankle. I appologized so much to him, but he said he was okay

Zach loves everybody and any dog. Big, small fat, skinny he doesn't care. Any dog is an instant playmate for him. He loves our Bassets and our shorkie. He won't even go out without them. We are thinking about adding another dog and I don't think Zach would care what we brought in.

I had a large dog before who loved all dogs, but really really loved "fluffy" dogs...by that I mean he would hump any collie, husky, golden he met, be it boy or girl and he was neutered...I never understood it. I think some dogs just have their prefrences, and maybe your pup just doesn't like the way certain dogs smell??
I'm still working with Rizzo on his socilization, he isn't a fan of people still, he gets really nervous around large groups of people, and will bark at anyone and everyone who approaches us on a walk. It's annoying but I'm trying to teach him the sit and wait while telling him quiet as the people walk past. Only problem is they always want to try to pet him, which in turn makes him hop up and dive behind me and then starts his barking fits...Ugh! Unfortunately this happens when I'm walking out in town and cant tell the Italians no, for some reason when they see something they want they "no capito" anything I'm saying, and will continue to try to pet him while he his hiding behind me and barking...does that scream "please pet me" to you????
*sorry went off on a vent session, lol*

Was he leashed? Some dogs can be a little more offensive when leashed.

Our doberman is very wary of new dogs - she keeps her distance and runs away if they get too close. After a couple minutes she'll start to warm up to them and then she is all good. Maybe little Max just needs more time to warm up to new dogs, but I think continuing to socialize him in these situations will help.

I'm lucky that Lexi doesn't have any behavior problems, sometimes I worry that she is TOO friendly. The only thing is the fact she turns into a barking monster as soon as we hit the dog park. I think it's just the excitement, but she goes crazy. Ripping in circles, barking her head off - it's a little embarrassing for me, and I've been trying to curb it with no luck yet.

Lizzie is not good with strange dogs. I've only ever seen her take to a strange dog one time and that was a little fawn mix breed that I thought was a Pyrenean Shepard. Makes me think that could be my next breed . She has warmed up to the dogs in our agility class, but only after giving them all the rules according to Liz.

I think it's mostly temperament with Lizzy. I got her at nine months, and have taken her everywhere. I've had people give her treats, and she will take treats from people, but doesn't want them petting her. To me, it means I just have to be more careful with her.

My IG puppy, whom Liz wasn't crazy about but is pretty good with now is the polar opposite, LOVES other people, LOVES other dogs. The IG standard says IGs should be aloof, but not this dog. I don't really like this either, as she approaches any dog, friendly or NOT . All my other IGs are good with other dogs, but could take them or leave them. Same with people. If someone wants to pet them and calls them or indicates they want to pet the dog, they will let them. Otherwise, no.

Harley has started growling at other dogs, but only when he's in my arms. it's almost like he's saying, "haha, I have to walk. But yeah I've noticed Harley acts differently with certain big dogs. There is this one Boarder Collie, (my aunts) that he puts the barks to all the time, it's hillarious, he's not mean, he just says "listen buddy, I'm small but I have better manners, so screw you, you need to be nice to me, plus I'm cuter" (some of you may remember the vibrating dog park I mentioned, well that's the dog). In dog parks he also barks when he's on the leash at some bigger dogs, but the second they approach, the tough dog act disapears. I think it sometimes is a size thing, they try and make themselves bigger than they are.

Of course he's leashed. We have a leash law here.

I can't think of any. I hadn't really thought about it before. I suppose I am very lucky, huh?

She was just asking for the reason she stated. It was to give you an answer to your question. When a dog is leashed, they feel more restricted and sometimes that comes out as aggression as they feel they have no where to run and hide due to the leash.
