				   | I made Zoe's appointment to get spayed on Thursday. I am freaking out already! I just cant imagine what I would do if anything happened to her. She is almost 8 months old and weighs 3.3 pounds. She will have 2 baby teeth pulled also. And get a microchip. The vet is doing the pre-op blood work the morning of the surgery. I have a couple questions: 1. What if she goes into heat this week before her appointment? I noticed her vulva is a tiny bit more swollen than usual this morning. But no signs of bleeding or anything. The vet said they can still go ahead with the appointment, and that they frequently spay during heat cycles. If she does happen to go into heat for the first time before Thursday, would you wait to spay her? 2. I have 3 days off next week, the day of her spay and the 2 following. Do you think that is enough time for her to feel well enough and not need constant supervision? 3. Do they shave her for the surgery? Or for an IV or something? I just want to know what to expect and I forgot to ask the vet. 4. Would a premie onsie fit her? I dont think she will tolerate even a soft cone. Do the onesies work for protecting her stitches? Thanks so much! I dont know what I would do without YT! |

				   | Usually they wont spay while they are in heat but if your vet says there are no complications from it I would trust his judgement. Now its been yrs since Jewels was spayed but I remember the worst time she had was the night of the spay. She just shook and seemed uncomfortable. I think it was from the anesthesia. The next day though she was her normal self. I think you have allowed enough time. Just make sure they give you pain meds because some vets dont unless you ask. She may not need them but they are good to have in case. I dont know about the onsie so Ill let someone else answer that. I know you will worry but try not to too much this is done every day and is being done by a qualified vet. Good luck

				   | Jezebel had the same things done at 7 months -- spay, 2 teeth, and microchip, but she was bigger than your girl, and I was still a nervous wreck! 1. If she is going into heat, I would probably wait, but your vet does seem experienced in handling spay during heat so it is up to you re how comfortable you are with that. It does make things a little more complicated. 2. Sounds like you have plenty of time off. She should be back to "mostly OK" where she can be left alone by the day you are planning on returning to work. She will probably be OK sooner than that. 3. They will shave her tummy. 4. I used onesies, just cut a hole in the backside so that her privates were exposed for peeing/pooping, but the stitches were still covered. At her size, a preemie would probably fit best. Walmart has the Gerber brand in a 5-pack. They worked beautifully. Not only did they keep her from getting to the stitches, but they also prevented the incision from touch the floor when she laid down on it, and prevented things like grass from touching the incision when she went outside, something an e-collar can't do.

				   | 1. It's ok to go ahead with it, but it is safer to wait. I'd wait. 2. A couple days with her should be plenty. 3. Yes, her abdomen and a small spot where the IV is placed will be shaved. 4. Onesies are fine for some, but others bite through them. And because they do rub on the incision, the surgeon should give the go ahead to use one.

				   | That's a good point. I used a size that was large enough to be a bit "baggy." It should not fit tightly!
