| When to spay Mabel?? Hi - Mabel is 5 months and just under 3 pounds. I have always spayed my kittens and larger puppies at 6 months but am wondering if I should wait until she is a bit larger or would it be safer before she goes into her first heat. Thanks! |

| I recently had Princess spayed at little over 7 months of age. (3 1/2 weeks ago). Princess weighed 3 lbs. 8 oz. on the day she had her spay surgery. I was worried also since she is so small. Princess did great with her spay surgery. Our vet gives an option of surgery by scalpel or laser. I chose laser surgery for both of my pups. Your own vet may be the best person to advise you, about your own pup since he/she would be most familiar with Mablel's health history. I asked ALOT of questions months in advance and also before surgery to make sure Princess would do OK during and after surgery. I have only had the experience of having my cats spayed and neutered. I was not so sure if there was anything to be more concerned about with my 2 pups. It is always a good idea to have the pre-surgical blood work done to make sure your own pup is in the best of health internally prior to scheduled surgery. |

| It's not necessary or safer to wait until after her first heat. (What would be the point, really?) If she is a small one, you may want to wait a bit longer. Has she lost all her baby teeth yet? I would definitely wait and make sure--that way if any are retained, you can have them removed at the same time. |

| I just called the vets to schedule the pre-op blood work before she is spayed. Thanks for the helpful advice! |

| I waited a little longer because my Khloe was so small. She weighed 3.8 pounds when she was spayed at 8 months old, and did amazingly well. She acted as if nothing had happened to her. She wanted to play the day of the surgery and it was difficult keeping her calm. I would say wait until 8 months at the latest. Khloe's other sister went into heat the day after Khloe was spayed, so I don't think I could have pushed back it any longer.

| I have planned to wait til 6 months and at least 3 pounds with my Annie. She is very smll so I may wind up waiting longer than the 6 months. But I have been reading that there are new reports about wanting to wait longer, like after the first heat to spay. I found one that mentioned the potential to nick bladder muscles and leading to incontinence later on if they spy too early. Is there any other reason? This sounds more a matter of vet skill than a real reason. Another said the female parts are easier to distinguish after a heat but then went on to say that during the heat they are even easier to see, but no vet prefers to spay when they are in heat due to the risk. If I don't hear more of the reasoning for waiting, I will probably stick to my original plan.

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | I too was wondering when was the best time to spay Poppy. She is 5 months old now and I have been told its best to wait until around 7 months to give her baby teeth a chance to fall out, then any that are left can be pulled at the same time of the spay. So I think thats what im going to do, im going to discuss it with me vet today.
