I agree with the puppy needing obedience no matter what. I believe that a dog will feel more like he has a place to belong when he knows there are boundaries and rules that need to be followed. I wish you the best of luck with your obedience training!

I think its way too soon for obiedience training he needs to adjust to his new surroundings. What he is doing doesnt sound like disobedience. It sounds like he is either scared or something is wrong witgh him. I hope you give him time

Have you tried sitting on the floor near him very quietly and ignoring him? Giving him a chance to come to you without you making demands on him may help. Really, if he's not being destructive or hostile, and he lets you approach him, you might just do best by not demanding that he come to you on command right now.

You're right that they are dogs, not humans, and we don't know what's going on in their little minds. But I would bet that he is trying to figure out if you can be trusted again after the grooming episode.

Kudos to you for making sure he did not have medical issues and for being willing to rescue this little fella.

you think maybe he might just be missing his real family? Have you put out found yorkie ads? have you checked lost dogs ads? Rather than deeming a dog that you have had for a grand total of a week as neurotic, maybe you should focus more on finding his family. Just because he was thin and matted doesn't mean he was treated poorly at his last home, it means that he is a yorkie that ran the streets for maybe a week and someone finally caught him and took him in.
I recommend trying a little harder to find his family, he is probably missing them...and these ones can wander for miles and miles lost with no idea where they are. What steps have you taken so far to find his family? Just checking microchip numbers? That is no where near enough, it should be, but some people don't realize that their information isn't automatically put on the microchip when it is put in their dog. Please give it more than a week to find his family.

First of all, Dexter had been homeless for quite some time before we agreed to take him. Signs were put up, lost pet postings checked several times a day, animal control offices contacted, and his microchip information checked (none of the numbers listed were in service).

As I said earlier I had a lot of people (clients at 2 different vet clinics, Petsmart, friends and acquanitances) tell me since Dexter is small, I shouldn't reprimand him for anything and should let him do whatever he wanted. This included peeing and pooping anywhere he wanted in the house, letting him decide where we would go on walks, scratching and chewing on my furniture, and the not responding issue.

Since there's no way I could live like that, I decided to reply on my own successful experiences with dogs. So, after 2 days of working with Dexter on obedience, me leading the walks, and gentle but firm reprimands when necessary, I am so very happy to report that Dexter sits, stays, goes to his bed, and comes when called 98% of the time on the first command. Only 1 accident in the house and he's acting like a happy little busy body again.

I hope you'll keep posting occasionally about Dexter. Yorkies are wonderful! I don't think they're anything like any other dog. I would love to see a picture of him if you ever have time.

Here's a pic of Dexter before his trip to the groomer. The vet thinks he's about 4 years old.

I'll bet you'll be crazy about him once you get him trained. Yorkies really are smart. I'm not just saying that. They learn very quickly if they have a good teacher!

Thanks for sharing his picture. He doesn't look old.

OMG how on earth did yo get him to do all that in 2days! Please come and train my little Poppy haha she is nearly 15weeks old and hardly listens to a word i say lol. Maybe because she knows she can get away with it? LOL
