Try telling him he is beautiful and get him a very nice, well fitted sweater that will hug his body and give him a sense of security ... it may help him feel more comfortable and more confident about him self.... he will come along. i know you meant well, but still, a trip to the groomers and 3 hours of shaving and cutting all of that "crown and glory " ... after loosing his family is a lot for the little guy . Of course the ideal situation would have reunited him with his family ! Blessings ! XOXO

| Since you've been involved in training, perhaps you've done agility? Yorkies are very good at agility training. I think he's cute and he looks like a little love bug.

| I've rescued enough dogs over the years to have learned that sometimes the original owners/family are not always the best thing for the dog. I've seen dogs (mine and others) that have suffered months or years of abuse and/or neglect absolutely blossom in a caring home. We've got a few books on agility training. I agree it would be a good idea for Dexter and the seemingly endless energy. It's been pretty easy working with him on the basics -- he's VERY food and attention motivated. He's a perfect little gentleman on a leash. I think he just needed a pack leader and some direction on what was expected of him. The most precious thing is he's started sleeping with Jake the BIG kitty at the foot of the bed at night. I wish I could get a picture of them, but if I get up so do they... |

| I think Dexter will blossom in YOUR care. I'm glad he's found a friend to cuddle with at night. That's pretty cute. Yorkies are high-energy dogs. After many years of yorkies, I haven't found one yet that couldn't walk my legs off. Little Kacee can walk over four miles a day. We usually just do half that because of work, not enough time or daylight this time of year. On the weekends we make up for it though. Most love people and other dogs. If you get time sometime, look up some videos of Jackson under the user name of Britster. She has taught Jackson some really cute tricks. They can be found in the video section.

| Ok, I've just read through this whole thread and I'm so happy that Dexter is happily settled in your home. I regularly rescue and foster too, so I am familiar with the issues of untrained, somewhat wild dogs. And kudos to you for handling the situation so superbly! I have to agree with the OP, while my yorkies are my babies, they are firmly trained too. Just because they are small dogs doesn't mean that they can't cause big damage if they aren't trained. And a lot of the problems we have with yorkies, like housetraining, are a result of ignoring these issues. Anyway, I say let dogs be dogs They love having a pack leader and knowing where they stand. And they blossom under loving care and firm boundaries, just like human children.

| I've always said that raising kids and dogs aren't so different: lots of love, realistic expectations, consistent rules, boundaries, and consequences!! I also think every dog or puppy needs a child... but not every child needs (or should have) a dog or puppy. |
