| Yorkies and apartment living? Anyone? I am looking to see anyone's experience with having a YT while living in a apartment. I live currently in a nice apartment with trees all around us and gated area. Just looking to hear about other people's experiences. |

| I live in NYC and a yorkie is a perfect apartment dog. They do need to be walked because they are terriers but they can be quite happy in a smaller space as long as they get exercise and love Keoki is wee wee pad trained and outdoor trained. I would recommend, if it is convenient, for you to just outdoor train your baby - because I lived on a 5 floor walk-up and the harsh winters in NYC I trained him for both. Yorkies are the best dogs ever and great for apartments!!!! |

| The potty pad works and I trained him on both- The only problem is that they get used to going in the house- If I lived some place that didn't require going down 5 flights of stairs I would have just done outside. You have to remember wee wee pads are pretty expensive and sometimes they miss them.. You can do both if you need to. There is a scent on wee wee pads that attract a puppy and they are attracted to it- I almost think it's harder to train them to go outside. Luckily I have worked on getting Keoki to go outside more than inside now |

| how I did it Winston was trained in a crate. Every so often I took him out and over to the pee pee pad. If he used it we cheered and let him know it was something good he had done. He is almost 5 months and is during very well. He is now allowed in the laundry room, family, & kitchen. He will come running from the family room to the laundry room were his pee pad is and use it. I don't let him in anyother part of the house unless I am with him. He has a mistake once in a while but its ok because there is no carpet in the rooms he is allowed. Most of the time I think its because he forgets and is playing. Now that he is a little bigger I can put his food out at certain times & that makes it easier. He potties when he comes out of the crate, and 30-35 min after eating. When we go outside he pees & we tell him good outside potty but he hasn't poo outside yet, only on the pee pad. Winters can get sometime cold in Ky. so I wanted him to use the pads in bad weather. Also learned this from a 2 yorkies I babysat for before I got my pup. They would NOT pee or poo outside if it was raining or snow, FORGET THAT IT'S NOT HAPPENING!!!! pads are wonderful during those times. Hope this helps you, good luck. |

| might think of picking one of these up Walmart & pet places have a tray that snaps onto pee pads to keep them from tearing them up. Early thread is right, they can get expensive. I found that if you have a Tractor Supply near you I buy them there. They are $20 for 100 diapers. That is cheaper than Walmart has them. |

| mickey my 14 year old yorkie lived in a condo his whole life. 1700 sqft to be exact (well from what my parents say...) he did fine he also did went on two walks. one 20 mins in the am, and 1-3 hour walk in the evening (depending on how he felt sometimes if he was tired or didnt like the weather he'd start heading home earlier) i cannot of course speak on behalf of mickey however he didnt seemed to be bothered living in an apartment.... (because we took him for walks) the whole time he's home, he always stayed in my mom's walk in closet (much smaller than the whole condo) so we kind of called it mickey's home :P hehe hope this helped |

| I live in an apartment and it's great with Wall-e. We pad trained him first, then he learned to go on grass by himself after watching my mom's dogs go in their yard. So he does both now. We take him for a walk almost every day, but he loves to play inside, and he chases his ball around the house. He also learned to make our livingroom/kitchen/dining room a race track and will zoom around the house when he gets over excited. It's pretty funny. We also have a park close by which is handy for nice days.

| I lived in a condo with my three yorkies and all we had was a balcony for them. They stayed in an x-pen when I went to work and I took them for walks and out on the balacony when I was home. It worked and now that I own my own home they are starting to learn to explore a little more. I noticed they make sure I am in eye sight, they'll go out a few feet and run back and touch my foot then do that over and over. I think eventually they will get used to it,

| My Yorkie and I live in an apartment and he does just fine! He runs around the apartment just as wildly he does in my parents' house and I don't feel like he is cramped for space. I do take him out for long walks and to the dog park pretty frequently so he does get the chance to run around and play outside. He is only outdoor potty trained (NC winters typically aren't very bad).

| The only thing I can add to what others have said is this: When your lease is up where you live now, are you willing to search high and low to find a place that will accept your furbaby? I cannot begin to tell you how many people surrender their yorkies because they are moving to a place that does not accept pets. I know lots of people think this will never happen to them ....they tend to think about what they can handle now and not worry about the future.

Sandy is potty trained before we took him home when he was almost 3 months old. He'll go to the pad in the corner of our hallway. Now we are training him to potty outside, twice a day. He still go to his pad in the evening to pee. | |

| I had my 2 boys in a condo. What is it you are looking to know more about? Some Yorkies can be barkers (aka - my 2!) and I used to get letters from the condo association. I started leaving a radio on during the day and that must have helped because in 3 years after that I had no complaints again. They also did a lot of damage to the walls, baseboards and the bottom of the cabinets, chewing the wood. They stopped that too with the radio being on. Welcome to YT!
