Grooming! Help! Ok, so i have a almost 9 month old girl yorkie poo named, Daisy. she has yet to go to the groomer. for many reasons; one is that i am nervous of how she would be handled, she is barley 4 lbs, and has a bit of a reputation at the vet for being a little spunky, (she has bitten a few people) so i am worried that she would have to be muzzled. Also I have heard that yorkies have delicate tracheas, not to mention my baby girl tends to wheeze and cough after vigorous play, or being walked on a leash. I would just like some advice on weather to take her to a groomer or do it myself. Also a side note:: we also have an older golden retriever who we believe was manhandled and abused at our local petsmart groomer, so as you can imagine i am very confused and apprehensive about all of this. So Thank You In Advance!

| Fear of the groomer is exactly why I do my babies myself. Do you think you can trim her? Its not hard and the worst you can do will grow back within 2 weeks ;o)

I found a groomer that allows me to stay with Remy while he is being groomed. We show up at our appointment time, I wait with him and am right there while he is washed, trimmed and dried. When he is done, we leave. As a result he is never crated, I know exactly what is happening, and how he is being cut. Plus I've gotten to know the groomer really well and we chat while she's working with him. Perhaps you can find a groomer that will allow you to stay with her??

I was lucky when I took mine in for the first few times to the Petsmart grooming because the manager was very willing to work with me and my concerns. I have two yorkies, one with special needs (AAI). First, I would bathe them at home and then take them in so they were never taken in the back room where I could not see them. And secondly, neither pups were allowed to have the leash around their necks, it was always around their chest/underarms only, and the manager was the only one that groomed them. She did have an assistant that helped her that I also became friends with. I was grateful for that, as the manager left and I had no way of getting ahold of her, so the assistant kept the same routine for me and I have since followed her to a new salon. Having said all that, I think you have to find what is comfortable for you and then find someone that cares enough to meet your concerns... not an easy task, but worth it in the long run. I've seen/heard too many groomer mishaps, don't settle at the risk of your precious fur-baby!

Maybe you can contact one of those Mobile Groomers that come to your house with a van. They do everything in the van in front of your house so you can watch. Don't use PetSmart or Petco groomers. They just train some kid for 15 minutes and let them handle your baby. You should get referrals from local friends and neighbors and find a good groomer. My last dog was snappy also and PetSmart told me she was not welcome back. However, my groomer, who is less expensive and does much better job, was able to handle her without any problem. She also does all her grooming at an open area at the center of her store so everyone can see and you can stay with your baby if you want. She owns a yorkie herself and knows exactly how to handle their delicate bones and trachea. So if you want to us a groomer, just research to find a good one. You can check online for reviews also. Many sites such as Yahoo Local offer online reviews on local businesses. Good luck.

Ziva is 1 1/2 and just went to the groomer for the 1st time. It was ok but my daughter says I do just as well. I practiced a little every week before her bath and then decided what to do next as I looked at her from different angles all week long. She was "growly" at first but with short weekly sessions she really got the hang of it. The groomer said she was easy to handle and did not expect her to be so good. I'd say do it yourself if you are willing to try!
