YT Addict | Hi, i'm New and so is my puppy Hazel! hi everyone, my name is Hollei and i am i mommy to Hazel who is 8 weeks old. My friend just so happens to be the breeder, and Hazel got cleared on Friday to leave her. She comes home to me tomorrow! i am quite nervous! i want to do everything right, but i also have alot of questions. i am going to crate train my angel. any tips, and no no's i should know about? TRUST ME! i have been reading up on EVERYTHING for the past month or so, so i know the basics. some questions i had: when can i walk her? i am really anxious to, but i know it may not be safe right now... When can i give her a bath for the first time? should i feed her more then 3 times a day? she has an ABUNDANCE of toys, my little girl is SPOILED. i also am keeping her in my room, which i "puppy proofed" to the best of my ability. i think i got everything. i was told that she may be scared of me the first couple of days and may not want to eat since shes in a new environment. thats gonna break my heart! well thank you in advance for any feedback! |

I would advise you to ask the breeder to keep her until she weighs at least double that. Look at the Poppy is home thread in the General Discussion forum, and you will find lots of suggestions about the care and feeding of a wee little one.

While the vet has issued a health clearance, most reputable breeders do not place Yorkies prior to 12 wks of age, and certainly not at 1lb 8wks of age. You will need to do a lot to insure her safety and health in these early days, hypoglycemia in one this small is a real and present danger. It really really is best if your breeder can keep her until she is older and weighs more.

However, you're puppy is just eight weeks and should remain with it's mother until 12 weeks of age, for a well socialized healthy pup. Your pup is very tiny and has just begun eating pretty well on it's own, but it is a crucial time. Your pup would be receiving it's first innoculation between 8 and 9 weeks. If nothing else, maybe taking the mom and the pups in for you to care for would be the best option. At this age my pups are periodically still nursing on their mothers. A good breeder never lets their pups go until a minimum of 12 weeks and weighing two pounds. The pups should have a minimum of 2 innoculations.

First one should be received between 8 and 9 weeks, 2nd should be received at 12 weeks and 3rd at 16 weeks. Rabies between 6 and 7 months. Check the YT library for Dr. Dodds Vaccination Protocol. Read it and follow it.

YT Addict | ohh ok. i know i was instructed to take her back in like a week for a shot, and that there were others after that. i'm taking her to the same vet as the breeder so they're already familiar with Hazel. |

| Hi .. Welcome to YT ... She if she can stay with her fur mommy for a few more weeks ... you want a healthy and strong baby. You can still go over a few times a week to let her know that you are her 2 legged mommy. I know it is hard not to snuggle and love her right now but really see if she can stay with her fur mommy ..just for a little while longer

| Congrats on your new baby...and welcome to YT! You've received great advice so far. My Lulu weighed just over 1 lb at 8 weeks. She didn't come home with us until she was almost 14 weeks old & right at 2 lbs. I am so glad she stayed the extra time with her furmommy & littermates. She adjusted so easily when she did get to come home & we've had no hypoglycemia episodes at all. It really is best if your baby can stay with her furmommy until 12 weeks & 2 lbs...it will make your life eaiser when she does come home. And it really is best for the puppy as well. |
