Senior Yorkie Talker | Does your baby now bark a lot? Hey everyone! Lexi was so quiet growing up. This month she has been barking a lot more, if she hears a noise outside my room or a noise from outside. Sometimes I look at where she is barking at but I don't see anything. Does your yorkie start to bark a lot too? Summer is here so I took out my fan, she barked at it when she woke up and saw it. But later on in the next day I got her to sniff it and gave her treats so now she's ok with the fan. Is there a way to tell them not to bark so much? or do you have to see what they are barking at all the time?

Lola's been a barker ever since I got her last August. I am starting to get fed up with it now. At first it was cute and all but she is really starting to get on my nerves with it. My two other dogs do not bark much and are quiet. She on the other hand is so vocal about EVERYTHING. I can see why she's been rehomed 3 times. I'd really love to try some things to stop it. Will be following this thread! | |

| I can relate..Lola was not a barker but recently (last 4 months or so) will bark at everyone and everything. She runs through the doggie dog on to the deck and yaps. I've started back with the spray bottle and spraying her everytime she barks. It help a little but not much.

| Levi barks when he hears something that bothers him. Neighbor dogs outside barking, the garage door opening, doorbells/knocking (even on TV). I think he barks mostly because he is trying to be protective, even though he LOVES everyone (friend or stranger) once they walk inside. He growls almost nonstop when he is playing with toys, and sometimes when he is playing with bigger dogs. He will on occasion bark while playing, and that is more frustrating to me than his regular "protective" barking...though I think the doorbell sound effect in commercials should be illegal!!

| Snoopy is a barker, too. I saw on "It's Me or the Dog" that Victoria had a dog bark, and then as soon as it quit barking, even to take a breath, she said "quiet" or "shh" and praised the dog when it was quiet. I think it's good to work on it when there isn't a big reason to bark til they get the idea.

| i got bijou about 2 months ago. she's about 4 years old and she was a rescue. for the first couple days, she did nothing. i think she was a little out of it with all the change. then, out of the blue, in the middle of the night, she got started when she heard something outside the door. it scared me out of my sleep, but i immediately snapped my fingers and firmly said "shhhhhht!!" then i whispered loudly "no bark!". it startled her and she was quiet. over the next week, she did the same thing a few more times, usually in the middle of the night when she heard something outside the door (this outside noise is constant, as i live by the elevator). i had the same response every time. on the couple times she did it during the day, i would notice that she would start to growl before barking (always having heard a sound) and when she started to growl, i would say shhhhht and then she would be quiet and i would immediately pet and praise her. she hasn't barked inside since. i don't mind if she barks outside, though, but she rarely does. i think the key to stopping it is to have an immediate response every single time. if you're not consistent, they won't learn. |

| Mabel who is 6 months old has just started to bark a lot more too! I guess she is feeling like a big shot now! I wouldn't say it was excessive tho. Dogs can hear noises literally a block away so it is no telling what she's barking at! I usually let her bark it out...I tell her calmly and quietly "thanks for alerting me, but i think it's all right." If she gets too crazy we get a soda can with loose change in it and shake it. This usually stops her. We call it the scary can! sometimes just saying "I'm getting the scary can!" will calm her down. She's just trying to protect her stuff and you are included in her stuff,so take it as a compliment!! It can be a nuisance at times tho! You don't want to stop it altogether but it needs to be managed. Try the scary can.

| Bailey is pretty good when it is just him and I, but when we go out and he is in the car he barks and bark, also when we are at my bf's place with his two dogs Bailey is constantly in their face barking. I'm working on it, and it isn't easy!!!

| Darlene, everytime i see Bailey's picture i am struck by how gorgeous he is! Truly he is one of the prettiest yorkies i've seen. I know what you mean about how hard it is to curtail this barking thing, my dad had a yorkie/?mix who no matter what he tried never stopped her incessant barking! Lucky for him they lived on a lot of acreage so neighbors were not a problem. My dad just got earplugs for at night so he could sleep! And Libby barked to her hearts content!

BUT... he is known for growling at night. If something is outside the front door, or someone is approaching me while I'm sleeping he will let out a really loud growl. I swear it's bigger than he is, like something you would expect from a German Shepherd. It wakes me up every time and I usually tell him, "Thank you." He's alerting me to something, which was one of my original reasons for getting a dog. (I use to live by myself) When that's not enough and he's insistent that something isn't right I get up. He's warning me of something so I think I need to go check it out. It's usually something strange going on outside that he can hear. I tell him thank you again, and he seems pleased to have done a good job alerting mommy of danger.

| Bark bark bark I know how annoying it is. My Sophie comes to the office with me and barks at everything all the time and I am getting alot of crud over it. She even barks at home when someone enters the room wearing something different, or carrying a purse, or a box or whatever. I call it the "Alert the media" bark. At the office it doesn't make sense for me to yell or make more noise when she does it, as we just look like we are completely nutz. I am at my wits end. I keep my door shut and play my iPod to block extraneous noise. I will try the scarey can idea at home. |

| Gizmo is a little over a year and half old and he barks at EVERYTHING! Kids playing outside, people walking there dogs or just people in general walking by the house! It drives DH and I crazy!! We've tried everything to stop his barking, we even have one of those sonic devices----doesn't work. The sonic device only goes off at certain pitches, Gizmo figured that out and changed the pitch of his bark! The only person he'll stop barking for is Grandma and all she has to say is shhhh!!! and he stops, doesn't work for DH and I though!

| My first yorkie (Isabel) was a barker. So, when Addy started out with the barking I started correcting her right away, letting her know that the barking was not going to happen. I was constant with her; telling her 'no bark' and I guess I am lucky, because it has worked. Although, she does get vocal when she is playing with the cats and I really have to be firm with her. |
