![]() ouch ! it really could have been the alligator clip - they can grip skin without you knowing it and these little guys sometimes don't show pain - in the future - try taking bows out at night to let her head 'breath' - mine always went bow free at night also - you want to brush her hair everyday (when she heals) because puppies tend to tangle quickly and bows are a big culprit especially when the hair is very fine... It'll heal - at least it didn't go into full blown infection and I'd wait a while before using anything on her little head

| I have seen this happen twice to dogs I groomed for clients. Both had used latex bands and caught a bit of the flesh in the band with they gathered the hair up to put a bow in it...nice little round circle of raw flesh... A clip can easily catch the skin...seen that also. A friend who was showing a male called me screaming to come over asap...she had accidently pinched a piece of skin in a wrapper..well, when the wrapper was taken off there was infected skin...scab came off and so did the hair..all healed and all was well... This may not be your Yorkies problem, but it is a warning to not leave a band in too long without checking it... Last edited by YorkieRose; 05-26-2010 at 04:20 AM. |

| Just left the vets office he said it's healing fine now to keep doing what I'm doing and it will probably form another scab so this time keep the hair trimmed up until it's better. The next bow she'll ever wear will be a topknot w a French barette and I'll make sure it comes out daily and it's loose

IF anyone does use these - gather the hair very gently-then always watch for loose clips - if they fall out your dog may chew or even eat them and you don't want that They may be conveinent but sometimes not worth the 'what if's. I only use them after a bath now to 'hold' the long hair out of their eyes while they're wet until till I brush them out and do the topnot right (with a bow)

| No, no oral antibiotics. They said that it looks like it's healing perfectly with the topical. I am using Bactriban (it's human prescription antibiotic) on her and they said that's perfect bcs it looks great. Well, as great as great can be for a puppy with an owie. We go back in two weeks for her 12 week shots but he made sure to tell me if I feel uncomfortable about anything at all to go in.

| I am so sorry you both had to endure this. You are not a bad mom or you wouldn't be heartbroken .Just want to say thanks for sharing this... Alot of us rookie moms will be able to learn from your ordeal. I do like to keep my FB's hair up for a couple of reason: 1. She has beautiful black eyes and I love to look at them. 2. She reminds me of Ronnie Dunn (Brooks & Dunn) the way it hangs when it's not up. Not a bad guy to look like but... she is a girl . I have wondered why her hair mattes up so quickly when it's up. I use a tiny little rubber type band that is not supposed to break the hair. Even after a couple of days I have to cut it out it gets so matted. She's 7 months so it sounds like it's due to her still having baby hair? I'm going to look into the bows someone else mentioned. Apparently someone on Yorkietalk makes them?? At any rate I've learned some valuable information so I thank you again for sharing and hope your both doing much better. Last edited by Imma-captivated; 05-26-2010 at 05:52 AM. |

Thanks so much. Minimomo makes them at a very reasonable price. I just bought some french barettes from her. So when my bald baby grows that patch of hair back we'll only use bands along with the french barette clips I ordered and I'll take them out daily and make sure from here til forever she gets a good scalp massage!!!

| Some owners think these things could never happen because the dog would cry in pain..not so. I have seen dogs endure terrible pain with little reaction.. I refused to groom a few who had infected teeth to the point they had draining facial abcesses..the owners could not believe a dog could have a bad tooth and not react...once they got them to the vet after my refusals, they felt awful..they dog almost always started acting like a puppy again and they realized it had been suffering... It is always good to go over a dog head to foot once a day...i |
