| Climbing out of pen My 7 month old Yorkie has figured out a way to climb out of his playpen/crate area! I didn't believe it at first, but it's true. He's never done this in front of me or my husband, but is sure quick to do it in front of our dog walker! So we got rid of his play pen and now just have his crate in the living room. We keep the door to the crate open and put up a gate so he is confined to the living room. He also has his wee wee pad, food and water. I'm wondering if he's happy this way (to have the whole room) or if it would be better to crate him. I don't think he'd like to be crated, but I hear it makes them feel safe. Does anyone have an opinion or had this happen? The play pen was working out so perfect until now. Thanks! |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | All but one of mine can escape an x pen. You can buy a cover or a large canvas crate which are enclosed. If he's very young...I'd crate him whenever I couldn't supervise him if I were you.

| My little girl figured out how to get out of her pen in 2 days! So much for her own little "apartment style" space!! Opi is 6 months old and has full run on the main floor which includes the living room and kitchen, but only while someone is there. We keep her crate in the living room (her big sister has a bed in the living room) so why not her? We crate her when we sleep until she is older and well trained...and also when we are leaving the house for any length of time. For when we are going to be a little busy to keep an eye her, we have a gate and give her safe space in the kitchen with her water, pee pads, toys and another bed. I was so bummed when the little 2 lb munchkin decided she was too good for the pen!

| I don't have any suggestions, but I'm in the same boat! I thought I had researched this topic pretty well before I made my purchase. I have a fabric playpen with the bottom attached and a top cover that zips open, along with 2 doors on the side that zip open. Within 24 hours of being here my 5 1/2 month yorkie discovered how to break open the zipper and get out. He's not even unzipping it, he's literally breaking the zipped area apart, I'm assuming by biting it! I'm heading out shortly to but a gate so we can atleast confine him to the kitchen until we figure out a better solution! |

That's the one I got, but the small version! I REALLY didn't expect him to be able to escape no matter how hard he tried, but it didn't hold him for longer than one day! I will say, I'm able to re-zip the zipper even after he breaks the links apart and he did sleep in it over night last night without trying to escape (this was after he knew he could). I found that if I put one of the doors against the wall and a laundry basket infront of the other he'll stay put (for now). I hope your pup is not as much of a Houdini as mine is turning out to be! | |

| Yeah, if he'd not tear the zipper open it's not bad! We've only had him since Monday, but I put him in there with his bed, food & water and a pee pad. He's taken to it well, pees on the pee pad. The bottom seems to be waterproof(ish) I think, although I haven't really tested it to see if it really is. I really like that you can zip and unzip the top, it keeps him from jumping out but also makes cleaning it and putting him in and out easy. The zippers on the side doors kinda get stuck when you zip them around the corners at the bottom and seem like they're sorta cheaply made (which is probably why he's able to break them open), so I was trying not to open and close them more than I had to. I looked for a while before making this purchase and didn't find anything out there that looked better. I knew I wanted a pen with a top and bottom and I wanted a smaller size since we live in a condo and have limited room. A traditional metal ex pen probably works better, but they all seemed so big and we really don't have the space. |

| Well all I can say is GOOD LUCK...lol...we had the very same problem with the Ex Pen. so we too decided to gate Riley and Bella in the Kitchen. well the both jumped the gate with no problem.. and you wanna hear the best part..we used a 40" piece of plywood for a gate..and they jumped it..with no effort at all..So we had to go back to the bad ole crate, for over night and when we leave the house. or when they cant be watched..they dont like it but, they left us no choice..lol...when you read info on the yorkie breed, how come it tells you about the hair color and weight, and personality, But it never tells you they are born with springs in their back feet...
