Default Climbing out of pen

My 7 month old Yorkie has figured out a way to climb out of his playpen/crate area! I didn't believe it at first, but it's true. He's never done this in front of me or my husband, but is sure quick to do it in front of our dog walker!

So we got rid of his play pen and now just have his crate in the living room. We keep the door to the crate open and put up a gate so he is confined to the living room. He also has his wee wee pad, food and water.

I'm wondering if he's happy this way (to have the whole room) or if it would be better to crate him. I don't think he'd like to be crated, but I hear it makes them feel safe.

Does anyone have an opinion or had this happen? The play pen was working out so perfect until now.

Thanks!
