| Colapsed Trachea Has anyone had experience with this? My daughter has taken a puppy that belonged to my son's ex-wife. She took her to the doctor today and she found out that she has a colapsed trachea. She has had a little cough since she was a puppy...especially when she eats or drinks. The Vet said there is not really anything you can do for it. ??? Any sugestions?

| My little Sierra has this. She gets it after drinking, or when she gets excited. It's not too bad and it doen't happen all of the time. When she gets a little spasm, we just stroke her throat and try to calm her down. Poor lil' things. |

| Jewels has a little spasm also sometimes when she gets excited or when walking on a leash. I have heard they can do surgery if it is too bad.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | That's so sad to hear.....actually - there is surgery for this if the puppy is a good candidate for it. I don't know enough about it to really help here ....but it IS an option ...they may want to ask the vet more about that to explore the possibilities of fixing it....In the meantime I hope they aren't using collars on the puppy - Harnesses are much better for small dogs.....GOOD LUCK !! I hope it's just mild and the puppy will be ok |

Yes, they have always used a harness. She has had this since she was just a little thing. She is still a little thing even though she will be a year old next month. She is such a darling! I would have taken her myself, but I had already been looking at this new puppy when my son called and said that his ex-wife couldn't keep her any more. My daughter has another yorkie who is almost 2 years old and 9 1/2 lbs. This little girl is only 3 1/2 lbs and needs to gain a little weight. I think she will end up being around 4 lbs or so. She is one of the sweetest little things I have ever seen. My daughter says that the girls are getting along wonderfully. I hope there is something they can do. Maybe she could get a second opinion from another vet.

| Thank you for the advice and the link to the page. My mom posted this to ask about my little Psyche. I've noticed that it's a little better since we purchased elevated food bowls for her, but she still has times when she coughs for up to five minutes straight. It does help when we pick her up and calm her down, but I was wondering if anyone had heard of any techniques that help puppies with this condition. Has anyone heard of using Glucosamine to treat this? I read an article that said sometimes it helps, and my vet said it's a good supplement to feed to your dogs anyways. Any input? |

| Im taking my 8 month old to the vet this week Last night my baby, roxy, scared me to death. She woke up about 6 am and starting breathing fast for maybe only about 4 seconds as if she couldn't get a breath. Then she went right back to sleep. I have noticed her cough once in a while - she likes to burrow in our shoes - stick her nose down inside my shoes - and she'll cough sometimes when she does that. I have an appointment with the vet this week. Well, I looked on the internet today to see what this might be. I have a feeling she might have the beginnings of a collapsed trachea from what I've read online on this forum and also just doing random searches. I hope if it is this it is at a stage to where it can be managed...I love my little baby! I have decided this is the pet for me, a yorkie. This is my first yorkie and my boyfriend bought my little baby as a surprise for me.....which is great but I know he didn't think to check out the breeder to see if this is a problem with the parents. Since she is only 8 months old I have a feeling this is hereditary. I love her anyway, and I will do whatever it takes to keep her and keep her healthy for as long as is possible. When I first got her I read up on possible problems with yorkies so I've never used a regular leash and collar ---- i bought a great halter harness for her which she likes much better than the regular ones. I've been very careful because I know little dogs have problems with this. Now, however, I am afraid she might have it anyway. Cross your fingers that this is something that can be managed! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I have had a lot of experiemce with this. My first yorkie Karma had it but it only bothered him when he got excited. H elived to 13 years old no problems. Then my second yorkie Zorro got it and he also lived to almost 13 years of age with out any real complications. My third Yorkie Gracie got it at age 5 years old and it was so severe that she had heart and lung problems she died at 6 1/2. A few things I learned was never put then on a collar, Gracie would love to chase a soccer ball around the yard and we had her on a tie out when we had her out and she would pull on it, which I think in hindsight was what really did her in, also you need to keep the weight off of them. I checked into the surgery with TEXAS A and M university on the recommendation of my vet and they sent me a massive report on a study they had been doing on surgery for collasped tracheas and the outcomes were not good. I spoke to a vet there and she said that where Gracie's was collapsed, in the thoracic areararely had a good outcome. Also they can come out of the surgery with a trach tube which is very hard to handle. Now this was in 1997 so I no it may be outdated. The vet can also give broncho diallator medicine to help open the airway if it gets bad. Hiopefully it will never get any worse. |

| I am starting to think that Porscha has this also, my cousin told me never to walk her on a collar when I first got her so she never has but she still has the coughing. It only occurs if she is super excited or drinks a lot at once but it still scares me! |

| I think Edie has a mild case of collapsed trachea. She might experience symptoms once every few weeks. I have not noticed that it is getting worse with age (she is 5 now), so I am hoping we won't have to resort to surgery... |
