Differences between Biewer and Parti Yorkies? I was looking at yorkie pictures and the parti and briewer look the same. What are the differences. |
The biewer was established in the UK and the parti in the US. The Biewer has been established as a breed of it's own, the parti has not. The parti is an AKC registered yorkshire Terrier with a color fault, the Biewers are not recognized by the AKC. Both the parti and the Biewer, originally came from two traditional colored yorkshire Terriers parents. You will probably get a variety of very compolicated answders, but this is the simple condensed version. |

Simply put...the Biewer originated in Germany (not the UK) in the mid 80's. Over the years it was selectively bred, named after the founder, and a standard was set. The standard is similar to the YT, but calls for specific color placement (white paws, tip of the tail, symetrical coloring on the head and face, etc) and calls for a tail. It has been recognized as a separate breed by some organization and can be shown in some venues. (not AKC) Partis are tri-colored Yorkies. They can be registered with AKC, but not shown in AKC, but can be in some other venues. There is no standard set for them that allows for the non-standard coloring, but typically, most Parti breeders follow the YT standard with that as the exception. |
So...this question gets asked allllllll the time and I'd like place something short and easy to read, such as what you all said above, in The Library - so it's always there. I'm almost afraid to ask (you know how these threads can go...)...but...which one of these would be the best one to use? Or, a combo? There are pieces in each explanation which I think are helpful and educational....but this is not my expertise, experts :). I'd like it to just be 1 post...which is why I don't want to move this thread up to the Library. |
Being a owner of Biewers & reading as much as i can about them & the parti's Misty's post would get my vote it seems she has listed everything very honest as to my reading on the subject |
I know I'm the farthest thing from an expert, but just from what I've noticed looking at pictures...the biggest visual difference I can see is that Biewers tend to have a similar pattern/layout to their colors, as Misty said. Not always, but usually. And partis seem to have a very wide array of pattern. Some of them are mostly white, others just have patches, etc. So for the layman photo viewer, that's what I see as differences. -C |
I personally feel that kpstoybox was the most informative regarding each. She listed the websites of the Biewer club and the Parti Yorkie club. Each one has great info on them about how each came about to where they are at. "You can get more info on the Parti Yorkie here... The reason that most Biewers have a consistent spotting pattern is do to the fact that the gene responsible for their white markings is called the Irish Spotting gene. Characteristics of this gene are white legs, chests, neck, under body and tip of tail. White markings don't cross over the back between the shoulder and tail. Parti's white markings on the other hand, are caused by the piebald gene and extreme white piebald gene. There is no consistent pattern with these spotting genes, it's very random. Extreme white's normally have some dark markings on head and near the tail with minimal markings on body, some extreme white piebalds are almost solid white.
