Differences between Biewer and Parti Yorkies? I was looking at yorkie pictures and the parti and briewer look the same. What are the differences. |
The biewer was established in the UK and the parti in the US. The Biewer has been established as a breed of it's own, the parti has not. The parti is an AKC registered yorkshire Terrier with a color fault, the Biewers are not recognized by the AKC. Both the parti and the Biewer, originally came from two traditional colored yorkshire Terriers parents. You will probably get a variety of very compolicated answders, but this is the simple condensed version. |

In all seriousness...they both trace back to the same lines but were developed in different countries. The Biewer Yorkie is a German tri yorkie that was denied acceptance by the VDH (Germany's equililant to the AKC) and so was labeled a new breed. The parti Yorkie is an American tri Yorkie and is AKC registered. You can get more info on the Parti Yorkie here... THE PARTI YORKSHIRE TERRIER CLUB - Home Biewer info can be found here... Biewer Breed Club of America Inc. BBCA index |
Simply put...the Biewer originated in Germany (not the UK) in the mid 80's. Over the years it was selectively bred, named after the founder, and a standard was set. The standard is similar to the YT, but calls for specific color placement (white paws, tip of the tail, symetrical coloring on the head and face, etc) and calls for a tail. It has been recognized as a separate breed by some organization and can be shown in some venues. (not AKC) Partis are tri-colored Yorkies. They can be registered with AKC, but not shown in AKC, but can be in some other venues. There is no standard set for them that allows for the non-standard coloring, but typically, most Parti breeders follow the YT standard with that as the exception. |
So...this question gets asked allllllll the time and I'd like place something short and easy to read, such as what you all said above, in The Library - so it's always there. I'm almost afraid to ask (you know how these threads can go...)...but...which one of these would be the best one to use? Or, a combo? There are pieces in each explanation which I think are helpful and educational....but this is not my expertise, experts :). I'd like it to just be 1 post...which is why I don't want to move this thread up to the Library. |
Being a owner of Biewers & reading as much as i can about them & the parti's Misty's post would get my vote it seems she has listed everything very honest as to my reading on the subject |
I know I'm the farthest thing from an expert, but just from what I've noticed looking at pictures...the biggest visual difference I can see is that Biewers tend to have a similar pattern/layout to their colors, as Misty said. Not always, but usually. And partis seem to have a very wide array of pattern. Some of them are mostly white, others just have patches, etc. So for the layman photo viewer, that's what I see as differences. -C |
I personally feel that kpstoybox was the most informative regarding each. She listed the websites of the Biewer club and the Parti Yorkie club. Each one has great info on them about how each came about to where they are at. "You can get more info on the Parti Yorkie here... THE PARTI YORKSHIRE TERRIER CLUB - Home Biewer info can be found here... Biewer Breed Club of America Inc. BBCA" Just my opinion though.. |

The reason that most Biewers have a consistent spotting pattern is do to the fact that the gene responsible for their white markings is called the Irish Spotting gene. Characteristics of this gene are white legs, chests, neck, under body and tip of tail. White markings don't cross over the back between the shoulder and tail. Parti's white markings on the other hand, are caused by the piebald gene and extreme white piebald gene. There is no consistent pattern with these spotting genes, it's very random. Extreme white's normally have some dark markings on head and near the tail with minimal markings on body, some extreme white piebalds are almost solid white. Another source for learning about Parti's is this website: CYTC...Party Color |

How about this, I changed Misty's words slightly and took out the "not in the UK," and added the links people suggested and renamed them, as well as adding my favorite link! Does everyone think this is fair? Quote:

Also, I personal don't have an objection with the YTCA link being there either. Both Partis and Biewers did originate from standard Yorkies, and they are the parent club, whether you agree with them or not. People just learning about these dogs may be interested to read ALL points of view, not just the ones we agree with. :) |
The YTCA wants nothing to do with the Parti Yorkshire Terrier and states so on their website so I feel we should not add a link to them concerning the Partis or the Biewers |

Misty's post in fine. However, I would like only facts be listed. She stated that "There is no standard set for them (the parti) that allows for the non-standard coloring". This is not true. The Parti does indeed have a standard that was recently accepted by the same venue that accepted the Biewer standard. I also have a BIG problem with linking the YTCA in a post concerning the differences between the parti and the Biewer. What would be the purpose of this? |

In my personal experience and from what I have seen by the countless litters of online breeders...Biewer litters... for the most part...do not follow a consistent pattern. The Irish spotting gene is just one of the patterns associated with the piebald gene. It produces the dark color over the back and down the legs...especially the back legs...and sometimes the front. And yes...this pattern can and does occur in Biewer's. But it does not consistently throw itself...even from parents that both carry those markings. Here is a great link that explains why. White spotting on Cardigans, Collies, and other herding dogs Ruffly Speaking: Railing against idiocy since 2004 I bred two Biewers (one that I would consider nicely show marked and the other heavy Irish spotted marked)...and got a puppy that was just about all white on her body. Yes..they eventually produced a few puppies with markings like they carried themselves. But they produced more "whiter" puppies as well. |

The YTCA is NOT the parent club of either dog and has NO relevance to this thread. How can they be the parent club to a variety they say doesn't exist? |

Good post! The YTCA sets the standard for the breed and cannot be excluded from information on parti Yorkies. The links are being collected so they can be pinned for educational purposes. All relevant information must be included. |

I wonder if this is the point where I should be scared I asked...or if that actually comes later....? :p |

If the YTCA link is allowed to remain..then I vote we also link to Poodle Club of America? They hate parti's too!! |

Whatever. Use, or don't use what you want that I posted Anne, and good luck trying to weed through the rest and appease everyone. :) |
