Default puppy age

I was just wondering at what age were your puppies when you got them. The one puppy we are most likely going to be getting this weekend is 4 months. Is that considered old for getting a new puppy? I was just wondering what the average age of everyones puppies were when they first got them.

Thanks!

many people give them away at 8 weeks but I have heard that it is better to get them at 12 weeks. A breeder would be able to help you better.

4 months is NOT too old by any means to adopt a Yorkie. Me personally Id rather have the Yorkie pup between 4-6 months of age. I feel I can see the confirmation better with it, etc.

My first Yorkie was 16 weeks of age when I adopted her, (RIP). Schatzie was 3 months.

aww all of the yorkies on here are so adoarable. Thanks for all the replies! My first yorkie Prancer was I belive 8-10 weeks when we first got him. We just lost him this past January due to cancer. It was so hard to accept and I still cant really get over it. He was such a great dog I loved him so much and miss him desperatly. It just feels so empty here without a dog that I'm so excited to get my new puppy. We've been all over looking for one and actually this one has a small hernia that needs to be removed when he gets neutered but he is just so cute! Thanks again for all the replies!

This is a great site!

I prefer to get them as early as possible because I like them to know only the most positive of experiences as well as take a chance of them bonding where they presently live. Shadow was 6 months when I got her and it was not till she was about a year and a half or two years before we bonded. 12 weeks is the perfect and preferred time frame, but four months is certainly not to old.

When I started my research on puppies the first thing I discovered was NOT to order over the internet (plus I couldn't stand the idea of having a baby shipped....just my opinion) due to scams, high prices, etc...

So, I started looking for a local breeder. I found a range of prices in my area of Texas. The first group were really low prices of $300 to $400. I interviewed some of these and it was scary! Either they were puppy brokers or backyard breeders with little or no knowledge or care.

Then there were the really high prices (in the thousands). These were usually older pups and show/breeding quality.

I found a good breeder who sold me a pet quality puppy (limited registration pending neuter)for around $800. I was able to see his siblings and parents, interview the breeder, and most importantly, I got to visit him several times before I brought him home. I was also allowed to research his pedigree and encouraged to do a breeder background check. I also had to go through an interview process myself.

Vet costs in this area are also a little lower than the national average. I think all of these factors come into play. Location, vet costs, quality and breeder reputation are all part of the equation.

I paid more for Gizmo than the average in our area, but I feel that it was money well spent!

Does it depend on the breeder?
I mean, how do breeders price their little pups?
I bought my first Yorkie for $600 5 years ago. I bought my second from the same breeder for $1200 4 years later. Both are of equal quality, but totally different in size, hair and looks. Of course, I love them both.

Well it seems like in CA the prices are a lot higher...I think the cheapest I saw was $1,500 for a boy but they went up to $5,000 depending on the size. Girls are usually more than boys. If the dog wa too cheap I would question something....but that may just be me.

Very true, California yorkie prices do tend to be much, much higher.

Default Healthy and Happy

I live in S. Korea and got my Eury from a vet recommended great pet shop. She didn't come with papers but papers don't make the dog to me. She is a very healthy puppy with a big personality. She's been to an American vet and a Korean vet and both say is very healthy and that's all that's important to me. While many peeps want a truly tiny dog, ie "teacup", I believe that as long as they are healthy and happy size truly doesn't matter.

I do have to say the cost of vets in the US are OUTRAGEOUS! Here in S. Korea the average vet visit for a checkup is $10 and with shots around $30. We have been several times to our vet, as is common with puppies with shots, etc and our total cost is less than $100. Now I don't know how much surgical costs are but from what a friend told me, they do a wonderful job and are extremely reasonable in price. So, if the care is definitely above par (they even text and call your cell phone to remind you that shots are due, etc) and the price is so reasonable, why on earth are prices for vets in the US so outrageously high??? I guess the answer is, it's all about profit, profit, profit. *shaking head*

Not so much for show quality status but for health reasons and piece of mind. After looking the price seemed fair, same for male or female and no mention of teacup or any other warning signs. The breeder was far out of the city (6 hour drive) and my sister drove her up for me when I got her.

What I DID find was in Toronto (for those that don't know it's a very large urban city) the prices were outrageous and that's without papers and backyard breeders. Toy dogs are a hot commodity in large urban areas and sadly that results in a lot of bad breeders in it for the cash and not the betterment of the breed. The groomer at the daycare I leave Sheila at says she sees 10-15 pound Yorkies all the time and the smaller ones (read: breed standard) are the exeption.

In no way am I saying you can't absolutely love a Yorkie larger than 7 pounds (AKC, CKC etc standard) but IMHO a breeder should not mate one larger than the standard. SO to make a long story short... what I have is a Yorkie I adore and a true representation of the breed.

I am sorry if I come off as a snob or offend anyone . I grew up around the show circuit and believe in maintaining the integrity of the breed, any breed. Breeders that are in it for the money and not in it for the breed are a sad fact of life I guess. I don't mind paying more maybe because I know how much it costs breeders to campaign a dog and maintain a good kennel with happy/healthy dogs.

Here is a link to Sheila's breeders. Her daddy is Oreo .
I know her . She is an excellent breeder . Her Yorkies are gorgeous . The first time I met her she was with Ricochet .

This is a great thread.

My question in relation to Yorkie prices is does a Breeder really get a fair price?

I know nothing about breeding, but when you think of all of the time, care, vet bills, etc. that a breeder puts into bringing our precious babies into this world until they are adopted by us at 12 wks., I bet a lot of them only break even, if that.

This definitely depends on the breeder. I got both of mine from a breeder in Dallas, Biscuit was $600 and Willow was $700. Some people think that is crazy, but in my mind, they were bargain dogs!

With Willow, she was so tiny and beautiful when I saw her on puppyfind, I immediately called just knowing she was probably not available, but, I lucked out! In fact, the breeder had just decided he was going to relist her for twice as much! But he gave her to me for the original price because I had already seen the ad.

The smaller the more expensive and usually females are more as well.
